wPower launch Toolkit on Gender Advocacy in Clean Energy
Earlier this month, Nairobi Garage Member, wPower announced the launch of their new toolkit on gender advocacy in clean energy.
Unfortunately, in the majority of sub-Saharan Africa and Asian households, the burden is on the women to generate the energy needed for cooking, lighting and heating. Because of this, women in these areas are experiencing negative health and socio-economic impacts of inefficient energy sources in their homes, as well as run the risk of violence which may occur when fetching fuel to run their homes.
The organizations or are working to give access at the household levels, often advocate for women’s participation independently from one another. These sector players often rely on different and sometimes contradictory data sources. These efforts often lead to missed opportunities, which could be capitalized on if there was a concerted effort to synchronize messages.
It is for this reason, wPOWER identified the barriers and opportunities for strong advocacy for women in clean energy access at the household level, through working group meetings, consultations, and events that focus on the potential of a collective impact.
Wanjira Mathai, Partnership on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Renewables at wPOWER says;
“Increasing clean energy access at the household level has proven challenging, yet the innovative responses to this have been nothing short of astounding. I consider myself fortunate to have met some of the enthusiastic and dedicated women and men who are consistently developing new approaches to what can sometimes seem intractable.”
This comprehensive toolkit highlights key calls to action that sector players need to support to create a cohesive and target advocacy agenda. This publication focuses on the key advocacy areas which aim to increase the involvement of women in clean energy initiatives, which will result in accelerated access to energy.
