On any hot sticky afternoon in Nairobi, you’ve probably found yourself stuck in yet another hours-long traffic jam in Nairobi City’s famously traffic-clogged roads.
But in recent months this situation is slowly changing because of the ongoing CBD facelift brought about by a number of ongoing infrastructure developments by both the National Government and the Nairobi Metropolitan Service unit.
In 2020, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services Unit (NMS) embarked on rehabilitating the Nairobi streets, and about a year later certain improvements were visible in the Central Business District (CBD).
The focus was on a number of roads in the CBD refurbished to be more inclusive of cyclists and pedestrians. A few examples of roads that have been facelifted include Kenyatta Avenue and Wabera Street which have seen the parking spots converted to bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways.
Also visible are the tracks along Moi Avenue, past Serena Hotel at the Integrity Centre junction. The retouching on some roads has also been seen through the recarpeting of City Hall Way round-about together with Kirinyaga Road using an asphalt concrete overlay.
Repainting on the pavement has also sprung new life in the dilapidated road structures making them visually appealing as well.
NMS has gone further to construct termini and parking areas for public service vehicles coming from Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Thika Road and Lang’ata Road to ease traffic flow into the Nairobi CBD.
Apart from the measures put in place by NMS, there is also the express highway project, a 27km (17-mile) highway, some of it elevated, that connects Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the east of the city to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in the west.
The $550m (£410m) project is set to dramatically change the city’s skyline and is meant to ease traffic flows in and out of the center of East Africa’s main commercial hub.
With ten exits and one being an exit to the CBD, the project seeks in helping decongest the CBD and reduce the traffic which has always been a nightmare for many.
The city also has about 6 bus termini that are currently under the testing phase. The operations at the terminus will mark the beginning of decongesting Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) not forgetting the wider Nairobi Railway City redevelopment programme that is being championed by the National Government and supported by the UK government.
The programme is aimed at redeveloping the 425 acres of central Nairobi in a bid to ease congestion in the city and spur economic growth.
All these measures have been put in place to give Nairobi a face lift and return it to its past glory. Once these projects are complete, the CBD will become more palatable for businesses and city residents..
In Fact this has been working with more companies now setting up shop in the CBD maybe to tap into the great opportunities that the city has to offer & Nairobi Garage has not been left behind in this great renaissance.
