The idea of perfection and the ideal lifestyle that is constantly displayed by some on social media often leads to others developing self-esteem and other mental health issues.
Women go through a lot of physical, emotional, and psychological changes throughout the different phases in life from puberty, adulthood, motherhood, and parenting. For most a huge change is seen when they give birth and the struggle of trying to get back to the pre-partum body begins.
That is why Wanjiru Macharia, Founder of My Planted Kitchen started this journey that seeks to empower women between the ages of to live a healthy, nutritious, and fulfilling life.
My Planted Kitchen is a platform that offers health and wellness advice to women between 28-48 years. The goal is to bring people back to their roots in terms of eating healthy, staying fit, and being well mind, body, and soul. Its founder – Wanjiru Macharia – is a program coach of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition Toronto and has been trained and certified in Culinary Nutrition by the same institution. Wanjiru is also trained and certified in Sports and Exercise Nutrition.
In January 2021, the business grew and a new venture – Nutri Snack – was born. Nutri Snack focuses on selling healthy snacks to children and adults who are on a fitness journey. Due to the high energy content that the snacks are packed with they are ideal for pre-workout and post-workout.
In the beginning, the snacks that were available included: Keto Granola (low carb), Chia Chocolate Balls (high fat & energy), Chilly Lemon Pumpkin Seeds (a best seller) but over time the catalog has diversified highly.
Wanjiru Macharia and her team make all the snacks that are sold through their social media pages. Deliveries are made to their customers’ convenience.
Being a very niche business idea, it has taken a lot of effort to nurture a community of women who have seen the need and taken part in the program. Wanjiru Macharia began the business from a point of purpose and passion has struggled with being overweight.
It started as a personal journey of trying to live a better life after she gave birth to her babies then it grew into a passion, soon after she went to school and acquired her certification in nutrition.
After trying out a couple of dieting crash programs that did not work for her, she finally found something sustainable that enabled her to maintain her ideal weight to date. That same solution is what she gives to all her clients who are struggling with the same.
It is said that when you hit 30 years, life begins to make a lot more sense, and many times people begin to take things more seriously. The same goes for women and their weight loss journey, most begin to pay more attention when they get to this age and during menopause hence this informs her target market choice.
The pandemic period has not spared the business like any other but they have managed to stay afloat through diversifying their sources of income. My Planted Kitchen gives consultation services to all their clients so as to ensure that the program is tailor-made to fit their specific needs.
During other times they craft some challenges that women are invited to subscribe to where they inspire each other to just keep pushing and doing more with incentives offered for those who put in the most work. In order to offer value to their clients, during these challenges they provide the necessary information and tools that will enable them to maintain the same lifestyle even after.
Community & How it Can Help with Entrepreneurial Loneliness in 2020
Lives have been transformed through this program, women have developed more confidence, become more intentional about taking care of themselves, overcome self-esteem issues and become better all-rounded. This has got to be the thing that drives Wanjiru Macharia to keep going even when it gets tough. Every person deserves to live a wholesome life and it starts with fighting the mental battles and just getting the work done to reach your goal.
