You have probably come across a situation where you have asked for the same service from two different people and one of the service providers probably charged you way higher as compared to the other and you were probably wondering why.
Maybe on asking, they told you its because they have put in so much work to give you the value you deserve as a client. This is where Mastery comes to play.
To achieve mastery takes time. It involves determination, zeal, effort, intention, and discipline. It is something we often overlook, but mastery holds value well beyond the surface.
In the long run, how to achieve mastery is what sets apart superstars from the rest of us. It is one thing trying to be the best in the world and it is another trying to be good at what you do and giving value to your clients. Mastery in this context means being in the top 20% of skill, not the top 1%.
Last week we had the Privilege of having Ben Kiruthi CEO of Sun Africa Studios host our After Office Hours. Key to his presentation was what it takes to be the best in what you do in Business.
So here are the three steps as explained by Ben that will impact you and help you succeed in your area of Business as you embrace the art of mastery.
First, decide what you are going to spend your time on. Look for the skill or domain you want to commit yourself to master.
Understand that you are moving into a world with its own rules, procedures, and social dynamic. For decades or even centuries, people have compiled knowledge of how to get things done in a particular field, each generation improving on the past
This represents a reality that transcends your individual needs and desires. And so your task upon entering this world is to observe and absorb its reality as deeply as possible.
After finding and understanding the domain, observe and learn from those on top of the hierarchy in that field. Try to understand what these people in your niche are doing right, by seeking mentorship, or simply carrying out research. Understand the trends have a goal and a vision in mind.
The second step according to Ben was skill acquisition. After observing now its time to practice what you have observed. Put in 10000 hours into acquiring the skills. Do it by day and night and when you are asleep dream about it. Learn a complicated move every day but don’t go quite hard on yourself. Focus on each movement to get the most out of each specific task.
The thing about mastery is that there is no short cut, you need to practice, practice and practice even more. Practice slowly at first, so you can master each section; then put it all together into one seamless action
You also need to note that there are different levels when it comes to practice, which means that all practice isn’t created equal. This is whereas an individual and an entrepreneur you strive to push yourself outside your comfort zone and practice your weaknesses
So after you have acquired the skills its now time to put everything into action. Put your own uniqueness and create something great. Do it better than anyone else. Once you have the skill under your sleeves take the next step and embrace what you learn, and push yourself to new heights. You must not only arrive at the level of a master but exceed past it. Have targets and work towards achieving them
This point of mastery isn’t about getting perfect at what you’re doing but it’s about being better every day. This is also where you bring in your involves creativity and innovation and other skills and ideas enter the fold. It is the culmination of what you know and what you can now do.
At the end of the day, the art of mastering takes long but it’s certainly a worth every single step and minute taken. While all the practice and long hours are challenging, it also reaps rewards and to survive in a world that is quite competitive and complex, you will not only need a single skill but the ability to master things.
