The DataHack4FI Innovation Competition is an annual data competition that promotes the use of data and data analytics to solve challenges experienced by individuals or communities.
The competition encourages Pan-African collaboration by creating opportunities for data enthusiasts and emerging tech companies to partner in developing solutions that address local financial and economic inclusion-related challenges.
Building on the previous seasons of the competition, Season 3 of DataHack4FI, will serve as a platform for each participating team to showcase the solution they develop to potential investors, partners and clients.
Data enthusiasts and emerging tech companies from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia are invited to apply here.
Through DataHack4FI, i2i is building a community of tech entrepreneurs, data enthusiasts, innovation hubs, academic institutions, development partners and financial service providers eager to apply their skills in promoting the use of data for financial and economic inclusion.
The last two DataHack4FI Seasons held in Kenya, Nairobi Garage was the host. In Season the overall winner of the DataHack for Financial Inclusion was WazInsure who is also a member of the Nairobi Garage business community.
WazInsure developed supervised and unsupervised machine-learning models that analyse both internal and external data sources to predict the likelihood of a boda-boda driver claiming for a high-risk event.
The model uses structured internal data from surveys conducted on drivers. The external data used includes unstructured and crowd-sourced data from social media platforms and others. The outputs of the analysis performed allow insurance providers to better assess risk for boda-boda drivers.
The finals took place in Kigali in May 2018, where WazInsure won the solution and was awarded US$ 25,000!
Participating tech companies will be paired with a data enthusiast and these teams will have access to mentorship from data science and business experts during the competition.
Teams will need to engage with relevant data to design innovative products/services, which will be judged during the in-country finals.
The most promising teams will progress to the second stage of the competition, where they will showcase their prototype solutions to the judges at the Grand Finale.
