From Watchdog to Digital Investigator: How Investigative Journalism Has Shaped Africa’s Media and Society

Every year, International Coworking Day gives us a chance to pause and reflect on something that sits at the heart of Nairobi Garage: community.
When people ask me what makes Nairobi Garage different, my first answer is never the offices or the meeting rooms. It’s always the people.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of watching our community grow in ways I could never have predicted. I’ve seen founders meet their first clients over coffee, startups find investors through a simple introduction, businesses discover trusted suppliers just a few desks away, and friendships turn into partnerships that continue long after the workday ends.
Those moments remind me that coworking has never been just about sharing a workspace. It’s about creating an environment where people genuinely want to help one another succeed.
In today’s business world, where change seems to be the only constant, I believe community has become one of the most valuable resources a business can have.
Technology helps us work faster. Strategy helps us move in the right direction. But it’s often people who open the next door.
Some of the best ideas don’t come from scheduled meetings. They come from conversations in the kitchen, introductions at an event, or a chance encounter with someone who has solved the very challenge you’re facing.
That is something we’ve always tried to nurture at Nairobi Garage.
Every founder, freelancer, consultant, creative, and corporate team that joins our spaces brings a different perspective. Together, those experiences create an ecosystem where businesses don’t just work alongside one another, they learn from one another.
I’ve lost count of the number of times someone has told me, “I met my next client here,” or “That conversation completely changed the direction of my business.”
Those are the stories that stay with me. They remind me that growth isn’t always about having more resources. Sometimes it’s about having the right people around you.
As Kenya’s entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to evolve, I believe spaces like ours have an even greater role to play. We have the opportunity to bring together businesses of different sizes, industries, and experiences, creating an environment where ideas move freely and collaboration happens naturally.
Of course, a community is only as strong as the people who participate in it.
So, as we celebrate International Coworking Day, I’d encourage you to make the most of everything this community has to offer.
Introduce yourself to someone you’ve never met. Join one of our events. Ask for advice. Share your experience. Offer a helping hand. You never know where one conversation might lead.
