In 2015, United Nations member states, adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
At the core of them is SDG 3 that states: “To ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. Nearly all the other goals are related to this SDG or through their achievement will contribute to health indirectly.
Unfortunately, healthcare has stayed the same way for hundreds of years. It’s still a brick-and-mortar system that still takes a long time to deliver treatment & care when most needed. What needs to change is shifting how we view healthcare from that of the illness to the perspective of the patient.
Patient-driven solutions are likely to impact health rather than sickness for the betterment of all. It’s why innovations in the healthcare systems are worth nothing, more so those that make the entire value chain accessible, & empowering.
BYON8 is a Swedish Digital Health company based in Kenya, founded by two brothers and their father in 2017. With +4bn people living around the world without access to basic healthcare, the organization’s vision is to democratize access to healthcare and make it a right, not a privilege.
To achieve this they are providing everyone with a digital healthcare app called BYON8. Defined as your healthmate, the BYO8 app helps users check their symptoms for free, learn about possible causes and interact with doctors online for diagnostics, treatment, prescriptions, and referrals.
Based at our Spring Valley location, BYON8 is on a journey to take healthcare into the 21st century by making healthcare accessible to all. We recently listed them as one of the 14 Apps that are improving healthcare in Africa.
Their vision is to manage and access healthcare remotely. Whether you are in a rural or urban area, BYON8 commits to being there for you. The platform also keeps a track of your medical history by having it in one place saves time for both you and your doctor. Finally, it empowers your health by assisting you to manage mild conditions from home and unburden health professionals.
The BYON8 Mission is to help everyone in living a long and healthy life. The organization desires for you to live a long and healthy life by providing the best & equal healthcare for all.
We spoke with Josef Murad, MD the CEO at BYON8 about his reasons for joining Nairobi Garage, “We were looking for a start-up hub in Nairobi that could give us a kickstart in networking as well as an attractive and convenient space to work from in central Nairobi,” he shared.
By joining a coworking space, BYON8 foresees opportunities in networking and flexibility as their team grows. “You don’t have the physical limits of a smaller office when scaling in a coworking space. You can scale up the number of desks as you grow,” said Josef.
In terms of what BYON8 hopes to achieve while being based here Josef shared, “Nairobi is one of the most attractive startup cities in Africa so we are just going to take it all in, the entire Kenya startup atmosphere. We also want to learn about other startups and pain points in the market that they are addressing, you can never achieve something alone and that’s the great thing about a coworking space. You have others in similar situations and you can learn from each other.”
We agree with you Josef, being a community that loves to innovate, learn, and grow together is what we are about at Nairobi Garage, and we’re pretty excited about having you & your entire BYON8 set up on the continent. Looking forward to working together.
