Construction
Civil Works Supervisor – Kisii
Powerhive is seeking an entry-level Civil Engineer to assist design, construction, and quality control for a photovoltaic mini-grid program in Kisii County.
Working closely with the construction teams, the engineer will ensure that civil materials and activities are conducted efficiently and using best practices.
Activities include PV system layout, site perimeter, equipment foundations, perimeter fencing, PV racking, cable trenching, and LV and MV utility pole installation.
The Civil Engineer will assist to ensure that construction documents (including Bills of Materials, Specifications, Scope of Work, and Plans) are rational, optimised, and complete, and that construction is safe and complies with the Specifications.
Other tasks include the fabrication of speciality tools and process optimisation. The engineer should have construction experience and a desire to learn PV system design and construction.
Requirements
- BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel, MS Project
- Construction experience, specifically concrete and using local labor
- Generally familiar with construction methods and materials
- Desire to learn PV plant design and construction
- Understanding of the off-grid and mini-grid sectors in particular, and the renewable energy sector in general
LV/MV Supervisor – Kisii
Powerhive is seeking an experienced Low- and Medium-Voltage Engineer to coordinate 415V/240V overhead cable design, construction, and quality control, as well as interconnection, 11kV transmission, and transformer designs, for a photovoltaic minigrid program in Kisii County.
Working closely with the engineering and construction teams, the engineer will ensure that construction documents (including Bills of Materials, Specifications, Scope of Work, and Plans) are rational, optimized, and complete, and that construction is safe and complies with the Specifications.
The engineer should have experience with similar works in rural settings in Kenya or other East African countries. The Powerhive systems are typically 60kWp / 52kVA / 145kWh, with service to 100-250 customers. Overhead distribution is on 11m wooden poles using mounting hardware and procedures common to Kenya.
Requirements
- BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 2 years’ experience in the design of LV systems: Voltage drop calculations; Cable size optimisation; Writing Specifications; Liaising with consultants in special projects.
- 3 years’ experience in the construction of LV systems: Writing and maintaining Installation Procedures; QA/QC field inspections and punch list development; Jobsite safety; System commissioning; Project tracking in MS Project.
- Demonstrated experience on a similar project in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel, MS Project
- Familiar with relevant Kenyan codes and standards for electrical work
- Understanding of the off-grid and microgrid markets in particular, and the renewable energy sector in general
- Proficient with modern productivity tools such as MS Office, Google Apps, Asana, Slack, Salesforce
Service Lines + Home Instal Supervisor – Kisii
Powerhive is seeking an experienced electrician to manage Service Line connections, exterior RCD boxes, interior Readyboards, and simple interior wiring, for a photovoltaic mini-grid program in Kisii County. Working closely with the power plant and LV distribution supervisors, the electrician will ensure that house connections are installed efficiently and correctly. This will include management of direct staff and/or subcontractors, as well as management of quality control staff and record keeping. Installation and maintenance of smart meters is also a critical component of this position.
Requirements
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- EPRA Electrical Technician License – Class C1 or higher; Class B preferred
- Demonstrated experience on a similar project in Kenya managing teams of electricians
- Familiar with relevant Kenyan codes and standards for electrical work as well as IEC and British Standards
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
- Familiar with Readyboards, Smart Meters, and Photovoltaic Systems
Assistant Project Manager – Kisii
The APM will assist the Project Manager and the broader construction team to meet its targets and deadlines, managing the schedule on a daily basis, interacting with outside parties such as design engineers, permitting consultants etc. The APM will handle logistics for the construction team and ensures that all team members have the tools and resources required to fulfil their assignments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field (business, quantity surveying, engineering etc). An engineering degree is a plus.
- Project management certification and a minimum of 3 years of experience in project management
- Basic understanding of key concepts in construction management, civil and electrical engineering, and power systems.
- Understanding of the off-grid and microgrid markets in particular, and the renewable energy sector in general
- Proficient with modern productivity tools such as MS Office, Google Apps, Asana, Slack

Powerhive is looking for an experienced, certified HR professional to join our company in Kenya to manage hiring cycles, onboarding new hires, and updating/improving our internal HR processes. The role will be filled on a consultancy basis, and will initially be full-time and is expected to transition to part-time after the initial period.
Procurement Manager (Consultant) – Nairobi
Powerhive is looking for an experienced procurement consultant to join our company in Kenya to manage procurement and logistics for our power projects and productive use programs. You will be dealing with vendors all over the world but particularly in China and East Africa. In addition, you will be expected to improve internal processes and set up ERP systems. The role will be filled on a consultancy basis, and will initially be full-time and is expected to transition to part-time after the initial period.
