Code for Africa is seeking to recruit an agile civic technology pioneer to help expand the data journalism team in Nairobi. This opportunity is for 1-yer fellowship with the option to renew for a further 2 years.
Being part of this team will see you join Code for Africa’s Citizen Lab right here at our space. The lab uses open data and digital tools to help local newsrooms and social justice watchdogs engage with those in authority.
Responsibilities
Among the responsibilities you will be required to undertake are:
-Supervision of in-country teams of data journalists and technologists
-Managing a network of local media partners
-Tracking key project metrics and analytics
-Holding community events that bring together journalists
Ideal candidate:
-Significant experience as a senior journalist or in leadership position in the media industry
-Experience in the Global South specifically Sub-Saharan Africa
-Deep knowledge of and passion for technology
-Excellent leadership and management skills
-Fluency in English; ability to communicate in languages spoken in target countries is a plus
This position will also involve the spearheading of Code for Africa’s Outernet pilot which seeks to bring free “internet from space” for rural communities in the Rift Valley. Further, it is part of the International Center for Journalists investment into media innovation in Africa.
