Cloud9xp, an online marketplace, booking service and distributor for leisure experiences and alumnus of Nairobi Garage, has been acquired by HotelOnline in a share swap deal that will see the startup essentially become the B2C channel of the Africa-focused hotel-booking platform.
Launched in 2013 by Mesongo Sibuti and Tesh Mbaabu, Cloud9, has over the period raised funds and taken part in some leading start-up competitions including the Google Launchpad Africa accelerator, and DEMO Africa in Morocco.
The acquisition comes at a time when the Hospitality industry has been hit by a myriad of challenges following the COVID 19 pandemic though the industry currently is slowly opening up.
In 2019, CloudxP acquired a competitor Heartbeat Adventures, to go into flight and hotel bookings. The company has now been acquired by HotelOnline as part of a share swap deal.
Founded in 2014, HotelOnline is a leading e-commerce and digital marketing platform for hotels that has helped more than 1,500 hotels across 18 markets in Africa and the Middle East increase their revenues.
