On 28 to 30 June 2017, over 270 women gathered together to attend the African Women in Tech (AWIT) Conference. These 2 days brought together over 40 different speakers and 17 different sessions which included; hands-on tech workshops, discussions about education, careers in tech and networking sessions.
This event also presented the prestigious AWIT 2017 pitch competition, which brought together some of the most innovative, passionate and inspiring women in Kenya.
When asked, organiser Anie Akpe said: “One of my proudest moments was watching all the women speak passionately about their area of interest. Also watching the Demo pitches brought tears to my eyes on the creativity of all the women”
The pitches were heard and the judges were faced with a difficult decision. After deliberation, the winners for AWIT 2017 pitch conference were announced and are as follows:
1st place: Buupass – an easy to use, centralized digital marketplace enabling travellers to book and pay for their bus tickets from wherever they are. We sponsored this brilliant company a 6 months membership at our coworking space.
2nd place: Farmall – offers a comprehensive platform where farmers, agricultural lenders and industry partners can easily access agricultural tools and resources. To the runner-up we sponsored a 3 months membership at our coworking space.
3rd place: Parmat – an agribusiness startup that does value addition to the banana food crop. They process the bananas further to make flour that can be consumed in many ways.
We look forward to watching these winners as they move forward with their ventures and to see the impact that they will have on their communities.
AWIT will be taking place 27-29 June 2018 at the Michael Joseph Centre and you can look forward to more amazing speakers from women that have had their company funded as well as key executive women, investors, and the latest in technology gadgets. If you can’t wait that long for the next event, AWIT are currently putting together a hackathon for #WomenInTech which will take place later on in 2017.
