Producers Direct is looking for a farmer-centred designer who will work together with the vibrant and dynamic team to create materials that will support farmers in Kenya to access a wide range of information at their disposal.
Job Title: Farmer-Centered Designer
Reports to: Head of Information
Contract: 6-months, full time fixed time contract with scope for a longer-term contract
extension for the right candidate
Contract Start Date: ASAP
Location: Kenya
Goal: Deliver two main HCD projects in partnership with the programme team and farmer
co-design groups:
1. Redesign and update visual materials supporting farmers in Kenya to access reliable
information about Covid.
2. Continue with ongoing app development by sketching UX/UI designs and supporting
the testing and iteration process across East Africa and Peru.
Main Responsibilities Include:
- Creating designs for visual information materials to be distributed in both digital and paper-based formats
- Sketching UX/UI wireframes and designs for the digital tool development process
- Work with programme team to engage with farming groups
- Support in carrying out workshops (on and offline) to help gather feedback from farmers and Producer organisations in East Africa and Peru.
- Synthesise feedback and reiterate designs based on user needs
- Additional support to enhance farmer-friendliness of existing training materials
- Other activities as requested by Producers Direct management
Essential requirements:
- Fluent written and spoken English and Swahili (Spanish language skills a plus)
- Experience in creating visual materials for both digital and print
- Experience delivering UX and human-centred design processes – ideally in an international context
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant design and prototype software used for creating wireframes or testing interfaces with users (e.g. Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch)
- Strong visual design and communication skills
- Experience in working with software developers and digital technology
- Flexible approach to problem-solving and willingness to work with limited resources
- Comfortable working with a small team across multiple cultures and languages
Nice to Haves:
- Experience in working in a rural setting with farmers or low IT literacy populations
- Experience working for social enterprise / NGO / charitable organisation
