In line with this year’s #IWD Theme, #BreakingTheBias, there are still many barriers surrounding women be it in business or leadership.
According to Jennifer Nyambogo, Co-founder of Mawu Africa, for most female entrepreneurs, one main barriers is actually raising funds and in most cases the basis don’t even make sense as you judged on the basis of the different myths surrounding women.
“We are currently in the middle of raising funds and we are since setting a challenge & looking forward to raising a crazy round of funding this year.. There are a lot of barriers around this. We want to show investors that female entrepreneurs matter, and we are here to stay and innovate, and capable of change,” said Jennifer.
Having started off during the pandemic Mawu Africa is an inspiring and interesting story about how Jenniffer Nyambogo & Pauline Kariuki are transforming Africa’s Culture Economy through their e-commerce platform.
In a world where women are getting more seats at the table in business and exploring opportunities to grow and break biases, the duo are among the few women entrepreneurs who are breaking glass ceilings and scaling their businesses to new level.

Under our #OnesToWatchOutFor segment, Pauline, also agrees that the e-commerce has thrived over the period propelling their business on the right direction. “What we have seen over the period in terms of trade of our culture outputs, is great growth. Moving online has increased not only within Mawu Africa but also outside people have embraced social commerce. This is buying through Social Media Pages. This online demand has helped propel our business.”
On what they love most about their business, Jennifer said, “The connection we have the artisans and the creatives we work with. These people have amazing stories and are quite gifted. They have traditional techniques passed down to them from older generations & just being in that space and seeing them excel is simply amazing.”
Here is a sneak peak into their world and the things that we should look forward to in the near future as shared under our #OnesToWatchOutFor segment:
