Job Opportunity // Communications Coordinator with ITDP
Our member ITDP is looking fro a Communications Coordinator who will be responsible for strategy and management of communications at ITDP Africa.
This will include local media outreach, managing ITDP Africa’s website and social media, and working with the Africa Program Director and the global communications team in New York to develop visuals, stories and other materials for local, regional and international audiences.
The ideal candidate is one who understands the local media landscape and is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
This position reports to the Africa Program Director. The Coordinator will be expected to work creatively and communicate with the ITDP Africa team, ITDP headquarters, business leaders, journalists, publicists, public officials and civil society leaders
About
ITDP has played a role in several projects in the African region, including the implementation of high-quality bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, cycling networks and pedestrian projects. ITDP played a pivotal role in the implementation of Johannesburg’s silver-standard Rea Vaya BRT corridors and in Cape Town’s MyCiTi BRT. ITDP also supported the development of the Dar Rapid Transit BRT system in Dar es Salaam. ITDP is currently engaged in sustainable transport initiatives in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a communications strategy to raise ITDP Africa’s profile with the public and partners.
- Create multimedia content about ITDP Africa programs and disseminate the content through blog posts, e-bulletins, newspaper op-eds, social media and updates to africa.itdp.org.
- Maintain the organisation’s presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
- Respond to media inquiries in the region, serving as a spokesperson for ITDP Africa when needed. Manage relationships with journalists and monitor media coverage of transport and urban development in the region.
Liaise with ITDP global communications with regular updates on ITDP Africa’s most prominent projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 4-5 years of experience in creating content related to urban mobility and related fields.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, creative writing, marketing or related field.
- Experience working with journalists and media.
- Experience developing and implementing online communications campaigns.
- Ability to create attractive multimedia content including videos and infographics.
- Comfortable in a public speaking role.
- A passion for making information accessible, easy to digest and fun to read
- Ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced, international environment.
- Proficiency in WordPress, Adobe Design Suite, and Microsoft Office preferred.
- Ability to travel occasionally.
- Interest in transport and urban planning preferred.
