After Office Hours with Jack Hartpence

After Office Hours with Jack Hartpence

While Sustainable access to safe drinking water is the foundation for quality of life on earth today, still water remains to be the world’s most pressing problem.

With access to safe drinking water communities can move to address secondary and tertiary quality of life indicators such as gender equality, economic opportunity, education, and health

According to UN Statistics, in 2020, 74 percent of the global population had access to safely managed drinking water services, up from 70 percent in 2015

Still, two billion people live without safely managed drinking water services, including 1.2 billion people lacking even a basic level of service.

This has seen the demand for water rise owing to rapid population growth, urbanization, and increasing water needs from the agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.

Decades of misuse, poor management, over-extraction of groundwater, and contamination of freshwater supplies are some of the key contributors to the exacerbated water stress.

In addition, countries are facing growing challenges linked to degraded water-related ecosystems, water scarcity caused by climate change, underinvestment in water and sanitation, and insufficient cooperation on transboundary waters.

SDG 6 focuses on universal access to drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene by 2030, To achieve this the current rates of progress would need to increase fourfold.

Achieving these targets would save hundreds of people who die from diseases directly attributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene practices.

As shocking as the statistics look, one company is re-writing this story daily trying to close this gap by enabling access to clean water for people across East Africa and South Asia and through empowering the communities they serve.

In 2018, Jack Harpentence Co-founder and CEO of PowWater, co-founded PowWater, a public benefit corporation that builds transparent technology and makes impact investments to improve access to clean water.

So far Powwater has distributed over 17 million liters of water and its vision is to be the most trusted water supplier in Africa.

Powwater currently works in close partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has brought sustainable clean water to over 200,000 people across East Africa and South Asia.

In 2021, PowWater was inducted into the Business Call to Action, a UNDP consortium of the top 250 businesses in the world tackling the SDG’s.

As part of our monthly event series, #AfterOfficeHours,  this month, we are privileged to have Jack Hartpence, CEO of Powwater host ours After Office Hours session.
