Sam Chappate founder of Kapu has been named among 45 Most Influential Men in Digital Transformation in 2022-2023 by dx5 (formerly CIO Africa).
Sam was named alongside other trailblazers in the tech industry including; Benji Fernandes, CEO and Founder of Nala Money, Tesh Mbabu, Co-founder of Market Force, Prof. Bitange Ndemo, Strive Masiwiya Founder and Executive Chairman of Econet Group and Cassava Technologies, the mother company of Liquid Intelligent Technologies among others.
Sam, who was formerly the Country Director of Jumia Kenya, founded Kapu in 2022, a new digital marketplace that seeks to build the most relevant model of e-commerce for the majority of urban consumers in Africa.
Kapu will achieve this by working with existing community groups and local entrepreneurs. To make commercial sense, Kapu capitalizes on economies of scale by aggregating several deliveries to each agent drop.
They also enter into discount arrangements with suppliers based on the volume of stock bought.
Describing itself as a business-to-consumer (B2C) operator, Kapu who are our members based at Nairobi Garage Spring Valley it sources its trade goods directly from farm producers and manufacturers, saying this minimizes logistics costs and wastage hence the possibility of sustainably passing on the savings to their customers.
In their operational model, orders placed before 9 pm are delivered for free the next day to a local agent and payment is made on delivery while orders placed later than the stipulated time are delivered on the third day.
In an article by Business Daily, Kapu revealed that their agents earn a monthly commission of between Sh2,000 and Sh6,000.
The platform joins the growing list of startups that are digitizing the informal retail sector in Kenya, to enable both individual and group buying of food supplies through agents and online apps.
