Job Opportunity// JustDiggit is looking for Regreening Expert

Justdiggit is hiring an expert in landscape restoration and agroforestry with experience in remote sensing.

About Justdiggit

Justdiggit helps farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa to restore degraded landscapes using rainwater harvesting, agroforestry, and climate-resilient agriculture. While our main programs are in Kenya and Tanzania, they are also active in Togo, Ethiopia, and Madagascar.

In the coming years, the company plans to start up new programs in other regions and is developing a ‘Regreen app’ to spread the knowledge of regreening to all farmers with an internet-connected phone.

Furthermore, the company has awareness campaigns throughout Europe and Africa.

Who Justdiggit Looking For

Justdiggit has offices in Amsterdam and Nairobi, from where they work closely with implementing partners to initiate, implement, and monitor landscape restoration programs.

The number of landscapes that we are working in keeps on growing and diversifying: from the semi-arid rangelands of Kenya to smallholder farmlands in Tanzania and agroforestry schemes in Togo.

Justdiggit seeks someone with deep knowledge of all aspects of landscape restoration (from soil and water conservation to agroforestry, all nature-based solutions) and a keen eye for both technical innovations, as well as social factors that influence its success.

Remote Work Relationships // Virtual Team-Building Exercises to Try with Remote Teams

They are looking for someone with a sound theoretical background who also has extensive practical experience and can apply theory to project design and implementation.

You’ll work closely with the Chief Technical Officer, and you’ll be involved in all aspects of our landscape restoration work: from carrying out desk studies on restoration suitability, deciding on which intervention techniques will be implemented where to training and guiding our implementing partners and identifying new opportunities to monitor our impact.

Furthermore, you’ll support the rest of the Justdiggit team with knowledge and experience on regreening: from answering technical questions from donors to scouting new technologies to visualize our impact even better.

Your Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice on landscape restoration and regreening within Justdiggit and to partners.
  • Carry out site selection (both desk studies and with fieldwork) and suitability analysis for new landscape restoration projects.
  • Identify and decide on landscape restoration techniques to be implemented.
  • Train and advice our partners on how to successfully implement regreening activities.
  • Conduct field visits, assess all data coming from the field (reports, photos, measurements), and combine with remote sensing data to spot where there are opportunities to improve.
  • Work closely with the monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) team to refine our MEL workflow and increase our insights from the data.
  • Scout new developments and opportunities that can help Justdiggit (e.g., new regreening approaches, remote sensing tools, or sensors).
  • Support and guide colleagues by sharing your technical knowledge and expertise.
  • Help develop the ‘Regreen app’ by sharing your regreening knowledge and best ways to inspire, educate and activate farmers.

Required Experience and Skills

  • 8 years of work experience in project design and implementation on landscape restoration, soil- and water conservation, or agroforestry projects, preferably in Africa.
  • MSc. in earth sciences, ecology, agroforestry, environmental sciences, or related field.
  • Experienced in using remote sensing data, preferably in Earth Engine and QGIS.
  • A strong affinity with tech-related developments and especially mobile technology.
  • Understand and identify opportunities on how we can use marketing and communication to reach more farmers and create more impact.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a positive and pragmatic ‘can-do attitude.
  • Comfortable with working in the field as well as in an office environment.
  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of Dutch, Kiswahili, and French is a preference.

What Justdiggit will offer?

  • Be part of a great mission: regreen our planet!
  • As part of a fast-growing organization, there will be ample room for personal and professional development.
  • Great colleagues and a diverse team.
  • You will be working from our office in Nairobi or Amsterdam (depending on where you live) with plenty of opportunities to work remotely and regular visits to our project areas.

Justdiggit  committed to building a team that includes and welcomes people of different genders, ethnicities, faiths, sexual orientations, and other diverse backgrounds.

If you believe you are the right person for this role, please send your CV and motivation letter to vacancies@justdiggit.org. Please make sure you mention ‘Regreening Expert’ in the subject line of your email.
