Cynthia Wandia, the CEO and co-founder of Kwara describes herself as “a problem solver bringing together smart people towards solving impactful challenges.”
As CEO, Cynthia keeps the team focused on the organizational objectives being careful to cultivate, coach, and develop her team members “by humbly realizing the limits of my knowledge,” she shared in an interview with the Catalyst Fund.
She works towards paving the way for Kwara team members to be the experts in their areas of work, and “safely try, explore and experiment” until they get it right. It is this mindset that helped Kwara launch a Customer Success Traineeship program seeking to help young graduates fast-track their careers in fintech in January 2021. The traineeship is in partnership with Catalyst Fund and Cambridge University.
Cynthia has an Engineering degree from Yale University and worked in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North as well as South America prior to founding Kwara. In 2018, Business Daily Africa, named Cynthia Wandia, one of the Kenya Top 40 Under 40 Women; and in 2020 we listed her among the Emerging 13 Trailblazing Women Business Leaders.
Kwara digitizes the world’s financial cooperatives (SACCOs), giving their members an easier way to manage money and build a credit history while giving SACCOs a modern way to run their banking business. The company’s digital banking platform offers a secure, modern, and affordable digital banking platform for SACCOs and their members, who are often excluded by traditional banks.
Started in 2018 in Kenya, Kwara aims to enable the world’s 3 billion underserved to become financially independent. Kwara, who has been our members in Kilimani for a number of years, has in the recent past marked major milestones, the key to them being named as 2019 Global Fintech Hackcelerator winners in Kenya. In March 2019, they were also named as one of the #InclusiveFintechh50 winners.
Also in 2019, Kwara was among ten African Startups that participated and graduated in the Google for Startups UK-Africa immersion. The organization was also shortlisted among 30 African companies for the second cohort of the Wimbart Office Hours program in 2020. We listed them as part of the 12 organizations that prospered in 2020.
