HiiL to fund African Projects advocating for justice

The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) is looking to fund exciting startups, projects and ideas with up to 20,000 EUR.

The HiiL funding targets innovators seeking to come up with projects that ensure access to justice for people in need or those tackling the biggest legal and social justice issues in their communities.

These issues include, but are not limited to, themes such as fair employment, law enforcement/crime, land disputes, and others.

Following that, the most promising project will be taken to The Hague in order to participate in the HiiL Justice Entrepreneur School, an intensive week-long programme of specialist business training and technical advice.

Selected innovations will then take part in the HiiL Justice Accelerator programme, which runs for between three months and one year depending on the innovator’s needs.

The application closes on 31st May 2018. Applications can submitted here.

Now in its seventh year, the HiiL Innovating Justice Challenge is organized annually by the Innovating Justice Accelerator to seek out the best justice entrepreneurs in the world. Since its inception HiiL Justice Accelerator has received over 600 applications and  is supporting 30 of the world’s most innovative justice solutions.

Some previous winners of our funding include:

Sauti: A SMS-based system that provides information not exchange rates, market prices, rules & regulations and a corruption-reporting platform for cross-border traders between Uganda and Kenya.

M-Sheria: A USSD-based platform providing cash bail and legal help for matatu drivers in Nairobi, Kenya.

Usalama; a Kenyan app that allows users, when in danger, to contact emergency service providers.

Tambua: a Kenyan app that allows users to check whether pharmaceutical drugs they have bough are counterfeit.

Mulika Hongo: a SMS-based corruption-reporting system active in over 12 counties in Kenya.

Famalia: an SMS-based system through which one can keep track of their ongoing court cases. The system has been piloted in Kiambu, Kenya.
