Few people know that Before Bitcoin and the blockchain, a vibrant group of pioneers pursued the vision of digital cash and financial cryptography in the 90s- what is now called blockchain. One of these financial cryptographers and software developers was Ian Grigg.

Ian Grigg is an architect and financial cryptographer who has been building cryptographic ledger platforms for over 20 years. He is recognized for co-inventing the Triple Entry Accounting ledger, a concept that sparked the explosion of a $500 billion Bitcoin, and cryptocurrency blockchain industry – bitcoin is the world’s first triple entry system at scale.

He is also the inventor of the Ricardian contract,a canonical design pattern for tying a legal contract to a digital asset issued over  the Internet. His work on Ricardian Contracts foreshadowed today’s blockchain smart contracts.

Ian primarily works on exploring and building the next generation of identity and governance systems for users, and advising blockchain startups on architecture and business.

His current projects include

  • EOS, a next generation $1 billion funded scalable and governed blockchain
  • ChamaPesa – a new mobile savings startup for social groups like Chamas in Africa
  • Chief Scientist at Mattereum, a startup porting real world assets to the blockchain
  • An advisor to a banking project and a pensions project

His most recent projects included serving as an architect consultant for R3 Corda, a $100 funded consortium of 43 of the world largest banks. Ian was a audit consultant for Senegal’s Digital Currency roll out masterplan for Francophone Africa, serving under eCurrencyMint on behalf of Omidyar Network.
