SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Grant Brooke
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has been through the Entrepreneurship journey will tell you that the journey is not easy. The companies that we revere are successful not because they started but because they failed on the way and learnt from the failures. \nAs an entrepreneur\, the challenges that you are facing today are not unique to your company. From securing funds\, to scaling down occasionally\, cashflow management\, sourcing talent; let’s face it\, most entrepreneurs do not hit us with these hard truths\, but they go through these challenges. \nTake for instance a company like Cellulant\, the CEO\, Ken Njoroge once mentioned that they had to meet over 60 different investors in a two-year period that took up 400 pitches across the world to secure funding. \nTwiga Foods on the other hand\, secured its first funding in six months after they set-up their business\, but still they were constantly short of capital and struggled to meet the rapidly growing demand. \nDespite these challenges these two companies have survived the wave of time to become one of Africa’s most sought after. But the question to most entrepreneurs is do we get the whole entrepreneurship concept? Is there a manual to this? how far are we willing to go? and do we have what it takes to step up our game? \nJoin us for our next After Office Hours session with Grant Brooke\, Executive Director at Twiga Foods\, one of the fastest growing companies in East Africa as he shares his entrepreneurship journey on 6th June from 6.00pm to 7.00 pm on 7th Floor at Nairobi Garage Pinetree Plaza. \nGrant\, will share the Twiga Food story from a perspective that you have not heard before. Get to learn more on how he started his journey into entrepreneurship\, how he met his co-founder Peter Njonjo\, how the company got to scale-up fast\, the hurdles the company had to jump\, the lessons\, the regrets and much more. \nAbout Grant Brook \nGrant Brooke is the Executive Director of Twiga Foods\, a mobile-based\, B2B platform used by small- and medium-sized businesses to purchase fruit and vegetable stock from local and regional farmers. \nCurrently\, the company works with 5\,226 vendors to source and deliver quality produce at fair prices. With the use of technologies such as Blockchain\, Twiga Foods has emerged to become Kenya’s largest seller of bananas\, potatoes\, tomatoes\, and other staple commodities. \nBorn in Texas\, Grant Brooke found himself in Kenya during graduate school studying the impact of religion on economic choice-making in informal markets and spending a lot of time researching food vendors. \nFrom there\, he went to Oxford to pursue a doctorate on the subject. At Oxford\, he met and became friends with Peter Njonjo\, the former GM for Coca Cola in East Africa. The two began to discuss how they might apply Coke’s distribution model to produce\, and from there Twiga was born. \nSince the launch in 2014\, Grant has led Twiga to being one of East Africa’s fastest growing enterprises\, attracting top global investors\, talent\, development partners\, and media attention in the likes of CNN\, CCTV\, Fast Company\, and The BBC. \nTwiga has also grown to be the largest supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables in Nairobi\, with some 250 full-time staff\, delivering to thousands of vendors a week. \nBy March this year Twiga Foods had reached the $30 million (Sh300 million)-mark in investment. In April\, Twiga Foods\, appointed the company’s co-founder Peter Njonjo to become the company’s CEO taking over from Grant Brooke. \nTwiga Foods was also named among East Africa’s top ten tech companies to watch out for in 2019 by I-DEV International. \n  \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth. SUMMARY:#HHNBO Learn how to use Open-source Intelligence (OSINT) tools with BBC Africa Eye!
DESCRIPTION:For this month’s Hacks/Hackers Nairobi meetup\, our member Code for Africa has invited Aliaume Leroy and Benjamin Strick from *BBC Africa Eye* to take us through the #OSINT tools they use to create their compelling investigative stories. \nBBC Eye is a news documentary series offering high-impact investigation and in-depth reporting from across Africa and we’re thrilled to have them join us. \nKeen to join us? RSVP here. \nAbout Hack Hackers \nJournalists sometimes call themselves “hacks\,” a tongue-in-cheek term for someone who can churn out words in any situation. Hackers use the digital equivalent of duct tape to whip out code. \nHacks/Hackers tries to bridge those two worlds. It’s for hackers exploring technologies to filter\, visualize and distribute information in a narrative way\, and for hacks who use technology to find and tell stories. Hacks/Hackers is a digital community of people who seek to inspire each other\, share information (and code) and collaborate to invent the future of media and journalism. \nHacks/Hackers Africa seeks to bring all these people together — so that we can all be more effective in making sense of our world. We aim to help members find inspiration and think in new directions\, bringing together potential collaborators for projects and new ventures. \nIf you plan to attend one of the Hacks/Hackers Africa events/meet-ups in your city\, please sign-up below & give us a bit more info about yourself so that we know who’ll be in the room. \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth.Get to know what events we having in the space here!

It drives right to one’s inner core and makes you face you fears and issues head on. My diagnosis was simple\, I was suffering from the Danger of Safety. My spirit was utterly dissatisfied with my achievements because there was a sense that I could do some much more and be so much more. After 3 months of sessions with Cece\, a revelation seared through me with conviction that rekindled my dwindling embers in to a blazing fire. It’s almost a year since that day. Today I am an entrepreneur and CEO of a business I have built from scratch that employs close to 50 people and I am on track to realise my dream of creating 1 million jobs” ~Job (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“Making yourself vulnerable is particularly tough for men of a certain age. This is compounded by demanding societal expectations that men are indestructible and the self-doubt you feel\, when your own achievements do not match overblown expectations. Cece has a way of allowing you the space to both explore and challenge yourself from a very holistic point of view. Through her “untraditional” process\, she was able to help me push the reset button and set sail in the right direction.” ~Tom (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“In 2016\, my team & I were struggling with marketing & pitching for business. We undertook the first workshop with Cece which was vital to lift us out of that situation. After the first training\, we felt more confident & inspired to sell our services\, both on location and when pitching in organisations. The level of business grew as a result. I personally did a number of one-on-one sessions with Cece during the same period of time which gave me the confidence to get around certain sticking points with staff and clients. I was particularly impressed by Cece’s time-keeping & level of preparedness before each session. I also continue getting referrals from her\, which I am grateful for.” ~Japheth (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“I have a business coach\, I read books. I watch tutorials\, I meditate. Yet I had a niggling issue that had been holding me back for years. Enter Cece. She effortlessly transformed my issue into a huge opportunity for change and growth. Her ability to listen\, contemplate then intuitively guide you to the place you need to be is unsurpassed. She’s authentic\, wise and super connected. Get to know her.”\n~Ben (Melbourne\, Australia) \nAbout your teacher: \nCece Ojany-Bekhor teaches leaders like you how to get the results you want with less struggle\, strain and more ease & flow instead. SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Dr. Muthoni Ntonjira
DESCRIPTION:Women have made significant contributions to science from the earliest times. \nHistorians with an interest in gender and science have illuminated the scientific endeavors and accomplishments of women\, the barriers they have faced\, and the strategies implemented to have their work reviewed and accepted in major scientific journals and other publications. \nOn 11th February\, the world marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science\, in celebration of the women contribution in the world of science and call for actions to remove all barriers that hold them back. \nDespite all these efforts and even as the fourth industrial revolution starts\, women still have less than two-third of the economic opportunity than men have. Fast forward to the future\, research shows that jobs of the future will be driven by technology and innovation\, and if the gender divide in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is not bridged soon\, the overall gender gap is likely to widen. \nIn celebration of women in science we will have our After-Office Hours hosted by one of the few women making great impact in the world of science.
