Hackers use the digital equivalent of duct tape to whip out code. \nHacks/Hackers tries to bridge those two worlds. It’s for hackers exploring technologies to filter\, visualize and distribute information in a narrative way\, and for hacks who use technology to find and tell stories. Hacks/Hackers is a digital community of people who seek to inspire each other\, share information (and code) and collaborate to invent the future of media and journalism. \nHacks/Hackers Africa seeks to bring all these people together — so that we can all be more effective in making sense of our world. We aim to help members find inspiration and think in new directions\, bringing together potential collaborators for projects and new ventures. \nIf you plan to attend one of the Hacks/Hackers Africa events/meet-ups in your city\, please sign-up below & give us a bit more info about yourself so that we know who’ll be in the room. \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth.Get to know what events we having in the space here!

It drives right to one’s inner core and makes you face you fears and issues head on. My diagnosis was simple\, I was suffering from the Danger of Safety. My spirit was utterly dissatisfied with my achievements because there was a sense that I could do some much more and be so much more. After 3 months of sessions with Cece\, a revelation seared through me with conviction that rekindled my dwindling embers in to a blazing fire. It’s almost a year since that day. Today I am an entrepreneur and CEO of a business I have built from scratch that employs close to 50 people and I am on track to realise my dream of creating 1 million jobs” ~Job (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“Making yourself vulnerable is particularly tough for men of a certain age. This is compounded by demanding societal expectations that men are indestructible and the self-doubt you feel\, when your own achievements do not match overblown expectations. Cece has a way of allowing you the space to both explore and challenge yourself from a very holistic point of view. Through her “untraditional” process\, she was able to help me push the reset button and set sail in the right direction.” ~Tom (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“In 2016\, my team & I were struggling with marketing & pitching for business. We undertook the first workshop with Cece which was vital to lift us out of that situation. After the first training\, we felt more confident & inspired to sell our services\, both on location and when pitching in organisations. The level of business grew as a result. I personally did a number of one-on-one sessions with Cece during the same period of time which gave me the confidence to get around certain sticking points with staff and clients. I was particularly impressed by Cece’s time-keeping & level of preparedness before each session. I also continue getting referrals from her\, which I am grateful for.” ~Japheth (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“I have a business coach\, I read books. I watch tutorials\, I meditate. Yet I had a niggling issue that had been holding me back for years. Enter Cece. She effortlessly transformed my issue into a huge opportunity for change and growth. Her ability to listen\, contemplate then intuitively guide you to the place you need to be is unsurpassed. She’s authentic\, wise and super connected. Get to know her.”\n~Ben (Melbourne\, Australia) \nAbout your teacher: \nCece Ojany-Bekhor teaches leaders like you how to get the results you want with less struggle\, strain and more ease & flow instead. SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Dr. Muthoni Ntonjira
DESCRIPTION:Women have made significant contributions to science from the earliest times. \nHistorians with an interest in gender and science have illuminated the scientific endeavors and accomplishments of women\, the barriers they have faced\, and the strategies implemented to have their work reviewed and accepted in major scientific journals and other publications. \nOn 11th February\, the world marked International Day of Women and Girls in Science\, in celebration of the women contribution in the world of science and call for actions to remove all barriers that hold them back. \nDespite all these efforts and even as the fourth industrial revolution starts\, women still have less than two-third of the economic opportunity than men have. Fast forward to the future\, research shows that jobs of the future will be driven by technology and innovation\, and if the gender divide in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is not bridged soon\, the overall gender gap is likely to widen. \nIn celebration of women in science we will have our After-Office Hours hosted by one of the few women making great impact in the world of science. SUMMARY:Workshop // How to align your business with the AI revolution
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to Artificial Intelligence  (AI) many thoughts cross our minds from Apple’s Siri\, to Microsoft’s Cortana and probably Amazon’s Alexa or even the life-threatening robots that many think are out to extinguish humanity. \nBut then what exactly is AI? Do we really have a definite answer to this? Interestingly\, AI has been around for decades but like most technologies\, it is experiencing a strong surge among businesses now. \nThis is because of the amount of data generated daily and the fact that the analysis tools that help organizations manage their data are also becoming more accessible. \nIn 2018\, Gartner predicted that the AI market will be worth $1.2 trillion\, indicating that that around half of companies surveyed are planning to adopt some form of AI and Machine Learning solutions soon. \nWhile Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are important tools for businesses looking forward\, there is a big gap in the overall know-how that business leaders are facing today. \nJoin Muthoni Wanyoike\, Team Lead – Instadeep for the first workshop in 2019\, on 29th January from 6pm to 7pm at Nairobi Garage Westlands\, M2\, Mirage Towers as she walks us through how we can align our businesses with the AI Revolution. \nMuthoni\, will also demystify AI concepts by proving practical examples of AI in use and how this technology improves our day to day lives as well as the huge opportunities for that lie ahead for startups. \nMuthoni Wanyoike\, is the team lead at Instadeep in Kenya. She is passionate about bridging the skills gap in AI in Africa and does this by co-organizing the Nairobi Women in Machine Learning community which provides learning\, mentorship\, networking and job opportunities for people with interests and working in AI. \nShe is experienced in Research\, Data science\, community and project management and community growth hacking. \n  \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth.Get to know what events we having in the space here!

SUMMARY:Workshop // How to innovate towards business growth
DESCRIPTION:The paths that lead to a company’s growth are multiple. Despite good sales figures and a positive out look in a company’s development\, companies are now forced to innovate around their products to stay ahead of competition and those that do not\, risk their business to failure. \nIn the last few years\, companies have risen to the level of the FORTUNE 500 due to innovation while other big companies have lost their relevance due to lack of innovation. \nIf you ask executives whether they have a chief innovation officer most of the executives will say they do. But what’s interesting is if you talk to them about why you use the term\, a common answer is “well everybody else does it.” This goes far and beyond to show how the word has gained traction over the years. \nBut come to think of it\, what is innovation? How will technology innovation especially around your product really help you grow your customer base? Why is innovation key for business growth? And how has innovation\, helped a ‘certain’ company grow its user base to over 50 million users just a few years after they launched their presence in Sub-Sahara Africa? \nWell\, join Zakaria Hersi\, Director of Partnerships for Africa at Truecaller on 4th December 2018\, from 6pm\, at Nairobi Garage\, Westlands Office\, M2\, Mirage Towers off Waiyaki Way. as he helps us best understand how innovation is key and part of Truecaller’s journey of reaching the next one billion people globally. \nAbout the speaker \nZakaria Hersi is Truecaller’s Director of Business Development and Partnerships\, Africa. In his role he is tasked with heading Truecaller’s expansion plans in the region as he is the first in the position since Truecaller set up its Sub–Saharan Africa office in Nairobi. \nHe is also the Founder of Orten.io\, a platform that\, through events and immersive workshops and training of talented women and minorities from low-income areas\, works to inspire greater inclusiveness and cooperation to support tech entrepreneurship\, in 2016 after nine years of entrepreneurial successes. \nZakaria has helped the Swedish investment firm Kinnevik launch Saltside in Nigeria\, as well as opening offices in South America for Besedo\, and has worked with some of the world’s largest marketplaces (eBay\, Match.com\, and OLX) \nHe is also an award-winning tech entrepreneur and has been recognized in both Sweden and Africa. \nHe is currently a Board Member at Global Village\, a non-profit organization in the suburbs of Stockholm. The organization is a platform for community engagement with focus on inclusion\, culture\, education\, democracy and diversity. \nHe holds a master’s degree in business administration and Marketing from Stockholm University. \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth.Get to know what events we having in the space here!

SUMMARY:HHNBO September: "Your Right to Know: Accessing & innovating using public information"
DESCRIPTION:Our Member Code for Africa is ready for this month’s edition of HHNBO on the 27th of September. \nSeptember plays host to the International Day of Universal Access to Information (IDUA) and we will be talking about Your Right to Know: Accessing and innovating using public information. \nThe Access to Information Act of Kenya enacted in August 2016 gives citizens the right to access information held by the state and obligates all public entities and companies that receive taxpayer funds or provide public services such as telcos\, banks\, and those engaged in oil/ mineral extractions to make accessible information on request by citizens. \nDo you know what information you have the right to access as a citizen? Can you file an access to information request to understand how public money is being spent? How do you file an access to information request? And can you use access-to-information requests to innovate? \nThe event will also feature a panel discussion where these and other issues of interest will be dissected. Come and learn how to file an access-to-information request and the steps you need to take in the event that a government agency declines to release the information you are seeking. \nThe event shall also discuss how access-to-information requests can be used to innovate and enhance transparency and service delivery. \nThe event will be led by a panel of guests and experts in the field. \nPlease RSVP here and don’t forget to share with a friend. \n  \nWhat is Hacks/Hackers? \nJournalists sometimes call themselves “hacks\,” a tongue-in-cheek term for someone who can churn out words in any situation. \n  \nStay up to date with our community events here.

They were able to revolutionize sectors  that have been around for centuries in less than a decade since they were invented. \nHow do they do it?
