SUMMARY:The Workshop // Know Your Investment Stage & Risk Appetite
DESCRIPTION:Learn which investment stage you are in right now and how to gauge your risk appetite in this interactive webinar with Paulyne Wairimu\, Financial Consultant Partner with Koa.\nThe question many of us ask ourselves is what is the best investment vehicle out there. However\, the right question to ask is what kind of investor you are and what investment vehicle is suited to your situation.\nThere are generally 3 stages of investors: pre-investor (where many of us are)\, passive and active investors. The good thing is that each investor stage builds on the skills of the one before it. Therefore\, no matter what type of investor you are now\, knowledge is all you need to move to level up. \nA pre-investor is simply someone who isn’t investing in anything\, anywhere. They have little awareness of investment options and are most likely signed up for statutory investments like NSSF by default of being employed somewhere. Without this requirement\, they’d have nothing in the way of investments. \nThe pre-investor’s lifestyle is defined by consumption rather than savings and investments. It is not bad in and of itself but a little more information would help them decide better in terms of investing. \nSecond up\, is the passive investor who is probably living busy lives\, raising families\, sustaining jobs\, hobbies or building businesses. It is a little difficult for them to make investing a top priority but they tend to know and apply foundational investment principles to attain financial security. \nPassive investors generally tend to own their own homes\, have appreciated assets\, and save at least 10% of their earnings. While passive investing is better than not investing at all\, it lacks many risk control strategies which in turn reduces the amount of control this kind of investor has over their financial security. \nFinally\, we have an active investor\, who runs their wealth like a business enterprise. While passive investors work hard to acquire and save money\, active investors spend less energy making their money work for them. However\, as attractive as this is\, active investing is hard work and that is why it is not for everyone. \nInvestment Risk Appetite\nThere is no right investor stage to be in\, it all depends on what you have\, where you are in life and what you are doing. For example\, someone setting up a business should be focusing on that and not necessarily being an active investor. \nWhile someone with low income at the moment can consider being a passive investor at first\, before later taking up active investing if their returns grow and they have more time on their hands. At the end of the day\, figuring out which type of investor you are will also help you gauge your risk appetite. Risk appetite simply put is the amount of prospect that you\, as an investor\, are ready to take to attain financial security. \nUnderstanding your risk appetite will also help you know what products in the market are for you at that particular time. Should you stick to fixed deposits or take up cryptocurrencies? Should you buy land with a chama or look into unit trusts? It all depends on your risk appetite. \nJoin the Koa team for an interactive webinar where you will learn more about starting an investment journey. In this session\, you will be clued in to how to evaluate your risk appetite and walk you through questions to ask yourself as an early investor. \nThe webinar will be fantastic for you if you: \n\nAre keen to start investing but not sure where to start\,\nDesire to know more about available investment tools & options in Kenya\, whether you are an early or seasoned investor\,\nWant to know how much you need to start your investment journey.\n\nInterested in attending this Webinar? SUMMARY:World Tourism Day Chat // Shifting Mindsets - Local Travel
DESCRIPTION:World Tourism Day is celebrated on the 27th of September. The tourism sector is one of the key economic drivers in Kenya. It comprises beach tourism\, ecological\, cultural\, and sports tourism explored by both locals and international arrivals.\nThe sector’s contribution in GDP increased from 1.4 billion US dollars in 2000 to 8.5 billion US dollars in 2019\, growing at an average annual rate of 10.86% & making it the second-largest economic contributor after agriculture.\nHowever\, many countries like Kenya\, often view international arrivals as the lifeline of the tourism sector due to the revenue earned through exports and forex\, therefore\, ignoring or largely underestimating domestic tourism. \nThis is evident as tourism performances in most countries are quoted mainly in terms of international arrivals and resultant revenue generated. In Kenya\, for example\, the data available majorly focuses on International Arrivals. Such limited statistics highlighting only international arrivals add to the perception that countries such as Kenya are simply hosting destinations lacking vibrant or significant local tourism. \nThe Importance of Local Tourism\nWhat we forget is that\, in most cases\, local tourism keeps the sector afloat in instances where international arrivals are affected. During the 1990s\, the number of tourists travelling to Kenya decreased\, partly due to the well-publicized murders of several tourists. \nFollowing the controversial 2007 presidential election and the 2007–2008 Kenyan crisis that followed\, tourism revenues again dropped by 54 per cent from 2007 in the first quarter of 2008 to reach 8.08 billion shillings (US$130.5 million) from 17.5 billion shillings in January–March 2007 and a total of 130\,585 tourists arrived in Kenya compared to over 273\,000 that year. \nInterestingly\, Domestic tourism improved during that period by 45%\, earning the tourist sector 3.65 billion shillings out of the 8.08 billion in the period being reviewed. \nAnd when the COVID-19 pandemic hit\, this was not any different\, as the industry faced losses of up to $752m forcing several large hotels to close\, leading to over a million job losses and a bruised economy. \nAccording to Statista\, the industry contributed 4.2 billion U.S. dollars to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The amount declined by nearly 50 per cent in comparison to 2019 where the value added by the tourism sector to the economy then reached a peak at 8.1 billion U.S. dollars. Due to the outbreak\, the number of international arrivals in Kenya declined sharply. \nBut again local tourism came to the industry’s rescue. Even before the pandemic\, Kenya enjoyed a 55 per cent rise in bed night occupancies by domestic tourists between 2014 to 2018\, according to official data. The growth has been credited to digital campaigns\, growing disposable income among Kenyans\, and efforts to promote affordable alternatives to five-star resorts. \nThis goes to show that there is potential for domestic tourism within African countries. In South Africa for example\, 60% of the total frequentation to national parks is by residents while 20% come from other African countries. \nIn the national parks of Mauritius and Nigeria\, 40% and 80% of the visitors are residents respectively. This represents an important tool for regional economic growth and development. \nGovernment Intervention\nThe Kenyan Government has also tried immensely to help the sector return to its past glory. Last year they set aside $5m to support the ailing sector during the pandemic. \nThe pandemic also opened a new window for domestic tourism as the Ministry of Tourism reduced entry fees to all Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) game parks and reserves for all the locals. \nAlso\, an increase in the number of tours and travel companies to reach about 400\, all with friendly travelling packages has seen a demand for domestic tourism. \nAdditionally\, initiatives like Magical Kenya have highlighted some of the beautiful and epic sceneries in the country that many locals didn’t even know existed not forgetting Africa’s growing middle class & its soaring population of young travellers hungry for adventure\, and the recently launched African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)\, the world’s largest free trade area by the number of participating countries\, are among the pillars seen supporting the future growth of domestic and regional tourism in the continent. \nWhile travel restrictions continue to threaten the international travel sector there is an opportunity for Kenyans to embrace the new normal and explore what the country has to offer by supporting local leisure tourism. \nBuilding Resilience Through Inclusivity\nWith all this in mind\, it is clear that domestic tourism has shown more resilience to external negative impact than international tourism\, the reason it should be given a priority in tourism marketing in Kenya. But is enough being done? \nAs we celebrate World Tourism Day on Monday\, 27th September\, we’re hosting a Fireside Chat as we Rethink local tourism. It will be facilitated by Symone Askah\, the Community Manager (Karen)\, and on the panel will be two speakers Amakove Wala of The Wanderlust Diaries and Barbara Schott of Tierranjani Africa. \nDate: Monday\, 27th September 2021\nTime: 3:15 p.m  to 4:00 pm\nWhere: Nairobi Garage // The Watermark Business Park\, Ndege Road - Karen\nThe chat will be in line with this year’s World Tourism Theme – “Tourism for Inclusive Development“ as well as sharing ideas on how to effectively communicate and make local travel more attractive post-pandemic. \nAbout the Speakers\nAmakove Wala is the founder of Wanderlust Diaries\, a platform that allows brings together a community of travellers to share stories\, authentic reviews and give travel trade a platform to connect\, showcase and promote their offerings \nProfessionally\, she is a renowned Medical Doctor (MBChB) and Health Programs Manager with over 15 years of experience in health programs design\, management\, and implementation. She is a key contributor to the development of several guidelines\, health bills\, and health sector policies. \nAmakove is also an accomplished leader\, known and respected for program refinements and building credibility and partnerships with leading national and international health sector stakeholders and Non-Governmental Organizations including the Ministry of Health\, county governments\, WHO\, IFC World Bank\, IntraHealth\, UNFPA\, and GAVI. \nBarbara Scott is a co-founder of Tierranjani Africa\, a tourism consultancy that she launched with her friend Angela Njehia in 2019. \nThrough Tierranjani Africa\, the duo supports advisory and trained stakeholders in the tourism and travel sector in Kenya and in the wider African context. \nWith COVID-19\, they are also supporting companies and organizations in designing relevant strategy and organizational responses and crisis management. \nBarbara has been working in development for over 17 years. Her sector focus lies in regional economic development\, SME promotion\, and responsible tourism development and sustainability. \nShe worked in Myanmar for 6 years on various assignments\, incl. Community-Based Tourism development\, responsible tourism development and planning\, local economic development initiatives\, and sustainability matters.

SUMMARY:The Workshop // Intellectual Property (IP) Growth Strategies
DESCRIPTION:Learn how Intellectual Property (IP) Strategies can be leveraged to boost business growth. Hosted by Sisule Musungu the Managing Partner and Team Leader for Intellectual Property (IP) at Sisule and Associates.\nThe 21st Century has variously been dubbed as the knowledge age or information age to signify the role that knowledge and information now play in all spheres of life.\nIt is for this reason that intangible assets\, of which Intellectual Property (IP) is one\, are today considered key assets in any business be it a start-up or established business. \nAccording to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2019\, there were over 4 million industrial designs in force\, over 14 million patents and over 58 million trademarks. \nBut while IP is now a buzzword in business\, how can one\, especially Startups and SMEs\, leverage Intellectual Property (IP) for growth when you consider the costs and technicalities associated with IP protection? Where do you start? \nHow do you know what type of Intellectual Property (Patents\, Trademarks\, Industrial Designs\, Copyright\, Utility models) is relevant to your business? How do you know the value of your IP? How do you get your IP to market? How do you monetise your IP? SUMMARY:The Workshop // How to Build a Powerful Personal Brand
DESCRIPTION:The term Personal Brand has many misconceptions. Join Barrack Onyango as he takes us through going beyond the hype of personal branding and how we can understand its impact on us as individuals and on our businesses.\nThough the concept of personal branding isn’t new\, questions remain about how to create one and\, more importantly\, what it means to maintain and inhabit that brand.\nA strong personal brand will impact your ability to meet the right people\, attract customers\, land you the right jobs and in the long run\, make money. In short\, it’s a critical part of your entrepreneurial and professional journey\, especially in today’s competitive world. \nHowever\, at the core of human attraction is the fact that people will either like you and your brand or won’t. They will decide within a matter of 8 seconds if they are going to give you attention whether online or offline or completely ignore you. \nIn as much as we strive to build personal brands simply because it is the in thing or the trend of the century\, we should remember important factors about branding; your brand is not simply the fancy graphics\, words and colours you spent hours\, days and weeks to create. \nYour brand is what others think and say about you. It’s how you make them feel. It’s how you smile at them. It’s how you respond to their comments and private messages on social media. You should also not forget that social media platforms are a small window to who you are\, make use of it in building your brand\, whether personal or corporate. \nAs you build your company’s brand identity\, be deliberate and check that each element is actually contributing to the overall perception you want to imprint in your customers or to your employers. The overlaying message here is; your personal brand communicates your value to the world. \nLastly\, before making any branding decisions\, first consider this: what is the perception you want to give to your customers? What’s your goal brand? Be authentic and really dig into the core “why” of your company. This high-level strategy should help to guide your branding decisions. \nYour brand is made of perceptions more than it is made of fancy lingo and graphics. \nAt the end of the webinar\, you will be able to learn how to: \n\nIdentify and build your own personal brand\,\nIncorporating your personal brand into your career goals\,\nPresenting and communicating your brand effectively\, and\nExercises and strategies to help you live your own personal brand.\n\nSign up today!\nWebinar Topic: The Workshop // Building a Powerful Personal Brand with the YOU Factor\nSpeaker: Barrack Onyango  - Founder Sparks Corporates Ltd\, \nBrand Strategist & Co-Founder ATC Digital Academy (AfricaTweetChat)\nDate: Tuesday\, 13th July 2021\nTime: 10.00 am - 11.30am (EAT)\nRegister here.\nAbout the Speaker\nBarrack Onyango is the founder of Sparks Corporates Ltd & Co-Founder of ATC Digital Academy (@AfricaTweetChat )\, a hub that brings together the greatest minds in Digital Media to share & discuss emerging online trends. \nAs a Digital Strategist\, Barrack works with agencies and/or directly with brands to solve complex business\, brand\, marketing\, and developing solutions to meet clients’ brand objectives based on consumer insight and data. \nHe has worked on several strategies that led to brand positioning\, interactive brand through a deep understanding of target consumers\, industry trends and competitive brands. SUMMARY:The Workshop // Know Your Numbers; Know Your Business
DESCRIPTION:Learn how knowing your numbers will help you accelerate your business growth. Hosted by Fridah Ntarangwi – Founder & Managing Partner\, ZidiCircle.\nIn the same way\, you cannot drive a vehicle blindfolded\, you will not be able to run your business without having visibility of its numbers. Understanding your numbers helps you understand your business.\nYour financial numbers always need to be up to date as they let you know critical things about your business. Knowing your numbers can help you better understand if you are on track with your sales goals\, and targets. Knowing your numbers can also help you spot where you might be losing money & keep your costs under control. By just glancing at your numbers\, at any moment\, you will be able to know exactly where you are at\, in regards to your business objectives. \nNumbers in business come in many formats & names such as Cash Flow\, Net Income\, Profit and Loss\, Sales\, Price Point\, Gross Margin & Total Inventory among others. Organizations hire people well versed with numbers\, who are able to look at the data and make recommendations based on the information. They can predict outcomes or impact on your business based on those actions advised. \nYet most entrepreneurs tend not to think of themselves as a ‘numbers person’. They are instead creatives\, innovators\, ideas-people\, marketers\, salespeople who are very social and highly motivated by putting their innovation out there. They might have very little patience or knowledge to look into the weeds of financial statements and accounting. Usually\, they will hire or outsource the numbers part to a numbers person – namely an Accountant. \nHowever\, it is not enough to have an accountant. As a business person\, you need to know the cost structure of your business\, and how you are going to make money. You have come up with a sustainable business model\, and developed great products for your customers. \nBut what about the revenues? What’s your revenue model? What types of revenue streams can you exploit? What are pricing tactics? How do your revenue model and pricing differ from your competitors? How does this differ in a multi-sided market? \nAt the end of the Know Your Numbers; Know Your Business session\, as an attendee you will have gained critical knowledge on: \n\nWhat are your direct revenue streams?\nWhat ancillary revenue streams can you discover?\nWhat pricing approaches can you apply for your products?\nHow do you project your revenues?\n\nSign up today!\nWebinar: The Workshop // Know Your Numbers; Know Your Business\nSpeaker: Fridah Ntarangwi\, Founding & Managing Partner\, ZidiCircle\nDate: Tuesday\, 15th June 2021\nTime: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM (EAT)\nRegister here.\nAbout the Speaker\nFridah Ntarangwi\, is the Founding & Managing Partner at Zidicircle. SUMMARY:The Workshop // Boost Your Basic Tax Compliance Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:A Tax Compliance Knowledge Session on different Tax Requirements and Obligations for Individuals\, Businesses\, Start-ups & Side Hustles. Hosted by Oscar Musyoka\, a Tax Manager at Mawji Sennik.\nEvery year the filing of the Individual self-assessment tax return to be submitted by the 30th of June brings with it dread\, confusion\, anxiety\, and haste.\nIn pre-pandemic years\, last-minute taxpayer queues went around the block and then some. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax systems crashed and many were fined for their tardiness in the filing. Yet unknown to many the required filing can be done from January in the year following the year the income was earned. \nTaxation in Kenya is for the purpose of financing the government’s planned activities. It is Article 209 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 that grants powers for the government to impose taxes as a revenue source by both the national and the county governments. While it remains a vital source of revenue\, there have been continuous challenges for KRA to ensure that most taxpayers comply with taxation requirements. It doesn’t help that a myriad of new taxes has been introduced in the last few years. \nIn 2020\, we saw the introduction of the Turnover and Presumptive tax. Then The Digital Service Tax (DST) then came into effect early this year which makes it even more challenging to understand what is required from different sets of taxpayers. However\, ignorance is not an excuse\, and compliance is a must. \nTax compliance is defined as the process of filing returns\, declaring correct tax and payments by the deadlines set.  It requires awareness & education for individuals (employees\, consultants) and enterprises (start-ups\, business) to be confident in their knowledge of tax laws and regulations. \nAt the end of the Know Your Tax Requirements & Obligations session\, as an attendee you will have gained critical knowledge on: \n\nTax compliance requirements for obligations for Individuals\, Businesses\, Start-ups\, Side Hustles\, and the aspect of separate sources of income.\nEmerging trends on tax compliance and measures to put in place to maintain tax compliance status.\nNotable changes in the Finance Bill\, 2021 and how they are going to affect your business or spending patterns.\n\nSign up today!\nWebinar: The Workshop // Boost Your Basic Tax Compliance Knowledge\nSpeaker: Oscar Musyoka - Tax Manager at Mawji Sennik\nDate: Tuesday\, 8th June 2021\nTime: 9:00 am - 10:30 am (EAT)\nRegister here.\nAbout the Speaker \nOscar Musyoka is a seasoned tax professional with extensive experience in the provision of general and specialized tax compliance and tax advisory services across the East African region. \nHe has been involved in offering strategic tax planning and tax advisory services in mergers\, acquisitions & reorganizations\, transfer pricing\, tax health checks &  due diligence reviews\, and routine tax compliance services in various sectors of the economy. However you define success\, it’s what we all strive for. SUMMARY:The Workshop // AI for Healthcare in Africa by AfricaScan
DESCRIPTION:Join a webinar hosted by AfricaScan\, discussing the Real-Life Application of Machine Learning by Healthcare Companies in Japan: What can Africa learn from Japan?\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) has been used in recent years in the medical field as a diagnostic aid in X-ray and natural language processing for recording interviews between patients and doctors.\nOrganizations like AfricaScan are contributing to preventive medicine by using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to determine the appropriate timing of messaging to encourage people to change their behavior in order to receive a cancer diagnosis. \nIn the last two decades\, a variety of different ML techniques and feature selection algorithms have been widely applied to disease prognosis and prediction. The success of a disease prognosis is undoubtedly dependent on the quality of a medical diagnosis; however\, a prognostic prediction should consider more than a simple diagnostic decision. \nML algorithms can integrate data from heterogeneous sources for the detection of tumors as well as for the prediction/prognosis of a cancer type. Additionally\, when testing a patient for cancer\, a pathologist would want the highest quality results he can possibly get. A machine learning algorithm can review the pathology slides and assist the pathologist with a diagnosis. \nThe Workshop will involve presentations by healthcare start-ups from Japan on various topics touching on the following discussion points: \n\nWhat is Machine Learning (ML)?\nWhy does the world need Machine Learning today and in the future?\nExamples of healthcare companies utilizing Machine Learning in Japan:\n\nLEBER Inc (Healthcare Application)\nCancerScan Inc (Primary Healthcare Service Provider)\n\n\nAre African countries ready for Machine Learning? What can they borrow from Japan?\nMachine Learning career opportunities for African students and professionals.\n\nSign up today!\nThe Workshop // Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Healthcare in Africa \nSpeakers // Kenta Hara & Taga Sena\nDate // Thursday 29th April 2021\nTime //  9.30 am - 11:00 am (EAT)\nLocation // Online\nRegister Here.\nAbout the Speakers \nKenta Hara is the General Manager at AfricaScan Inc a Japanese social marketing company. Africascan Inc’s objective is to solve medical problems and promote health in Kenya and East Africa. He is also the Overseas Unit Leader for CancerScan Inc. \nAfter graduating from the Tokyo University of Agriculture Master’s program (International Agricultural Development)\, he worked as an assistant at the same university. In 2014\, as a JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteer\, he was assigned to a project dealing with health promotion through vegetables in the independence of Samoa. \nAfter returning to Japan\, Kenta engaged in intellectual property management\, new business development\, and project management at Ritsumeikan University as a university research administrator (URA). \nInnovative Growth // 10 Companies that Call Us Home \n \nTaga Sena is the Public Health Room Manager at LEBER Inc.  After participating in water resource development projects in Tunisia\, Uganda\, and South Sudan\, he pursued a medical career in the wake of his father’s cancer. \nHe also provides infectious disease control tools to the board of education organizations throughout Japan while promoting projects with the government and local governments at LEBER Co. Ltd. \nAbout AfricaScan\nAfricaScan Inc\, a subsidiary of Cancer Scan Co. Ltd. – Tokyo\, Japan\, is a company that was established in Kenya in the year 2014 with the vision of creating a healthier future for Africa by bringing best practices from Japan. The company offers life-changing preventive healthcare services in Kenya through various channels and science-based theory and technology. \nIt has the following products under its portfolio: SIMWAY app (a mobile application for promoting healthy behavioral changes)\, MedicScan Africa (an online platform for provision of continuing medical education to healthcare professionals in Kenya)\, and MedicScan Engineering School (an online school for training website\, healthcare\, and machine learning engineers). \nAfricaScan Inc in collaboration with Dive Into Code Japan is planning to launch an online programming school in Kenya in May 2021 to teach Website Engineering and Machine Learning courses. The curriculum has been developed in Japan and certified by the Japan Ministry of Economy\, Trade & Industry as well as the Ministry of Health\, Labor and Welfare. \nDive into Code (DIC) Japan works under the vision of “creating a place where people who challenge themselves to become professional engineers can seize their opportunities\,” They operate with an IT engineer training school for people who aim to find employment as web/machine learning engineers. Offering courses for web engineers and machine learning engineers. \nLEBER Inc Profile\nLEBER was born in January 2018 as an application to protect lives and the name was derived from the German word “LEBEN: life”. Although this service is telemedicine\, its mission is to “connect people to people with a sense of trust\,” which not only heals patients’ illnesses but also contributes to reducing overwork for doctors. Telemedicine is not a panacea and can never be as good as face-to-face medical care. \nHowever\, in order to provide adequate medical care to patients who are truly seriously injured or critically ill\, this app supports self-care and self-medication for healthy and mildly ill patients. LEBER strongly hopes that patients who are suffering right now will use this app to reduce their anxiety and alleviate their symptoms. \nSign up today!\nThe Workshop // Artificial intelligence (AI) for Healthcare in Africa \nSpeakers // Kenta Hara & Taga Sena\nDate // Thursday 29th April 2021\nTime //  9.30 am - 11:00 am (EAT)\nPlatform // Online\nRegister Here.\nFeature Photo by Thirdman from Pexels

SUMMARY:Transform Tourism // Being Resilient & Sustainable in 2021
DESCRIPTION:Transform Tourism // Being Resilient & Sustainable in 2021\nThe 2020 Pandemic took the whole world by a storm the better part of last year. One of the sectors that were widely affected was the tourism sector. This happened at a time when the sector was doing so well\, given that statistics show a record of about 1.5 billion tourists traveling internationally in 2019. \nThe pandemic saw a heightened uncertainty in the sector as travel restrictions were introduced. In Fact\, The United Nations World Tourism Organization estimated that global international tourist arrivals might have decreased by 58% to 78% in 2020\, leading to a potential loss of US$0.9–1.2 trillion in international tourism receipts. \nApart from that\, businesses in the sector were forced to either shut down completely or restructure to stay afloat\, not forgetting the whole issue around Climate change and global warming that is also eating into the industry. \nAs the industry slowly picks up\, we sought out to understand the aftermath effects and measures policymakers in the space are putting up to ensure the industry returns to its past glory. \nJoin us for a webinar with Angela Njehia\, Director and Co-founder of Tierranjani Africa\, a Sustainable Tourism Development firm that focuses on building capacity for tourism and travel-related organizations\, tourism associations\, destinations\, conservation organizations\, community-based tourism organizations\, and local governments\, on Thursday 18th March 2021 from 11:00 am as we look into the tourism sector\, the impact the pandemic has had on the sector and how organizations have navigated through the season. \nDuring the webinar\, Angela will also highlight examples of how they are aligning recovery plans and investments with a transition that meets the objectives of health and safety\, sustainability\, climate action\, and biodiversity protection.  \nOn top of it\, we will cover topics around the importance of policy coherence and public-private partnerships\, as well as innovation through digital transformation. Many solutions currently available and can be efficiently used through close collaboration and coordination among destinations\, businesses\, the local communities\, visitors\, policymakers\, as well as investors.   \nDo not forget to RSVP! \nWhen: Thursday\, 18th March\nTime: 11:00 am - 1:00pm\nLocation: Online\nRSVP via Evenbrite >> \nAbout Angela\n\nAngela Njehia is the Director and Co-founder of Tierranjani Africa. SUMMARY:#VirtualConnections // After Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga
DESCRIPTION:After Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga\nWe are living in interesting times now. There is a lot of focus on women in the workplace. The diversity agenda is under fire and women are at the core of it\, equal pay\, equal opportunity\, women on boards. \nHowever\, one sector that is still behind when it comes to having women at the top is the manufacturing sector. \nWomen are underrepresented and underutilized in the manufacturing workforce. Despite making up about half of all workers overall\, they account for less than one-third of manufacturing workers. \nInterestingly\, manufacturing continues to grow. It now accounts for approximately 16 per cent of global GDP and 14 per cent of employment. \nBridging that divide will mean reshaping the way people think about jobs in manufacturing\, educating them to the types of jobs that are available and helping them get the qualifications necessary to fill them. \nPut simply\, the manufacturing industry is in a state of reinvention\, and exciting\, educating and empowering women will be critical to the future of the industry. \nWomen represent one of the largest pools of untapped talent for manufacturers and closing manufacturing’s gender gap is key to closing the skills gap that has limited businesses’ ability to evolve and expand. \nIn addition to filling open positions\, though\, research shows that gender diversity benefits manufacturing firms by creating a culture that improves their ability to innovate and grow. \nAnd more than just bottom lines\, women in manufacturing are building meaningful careers—and quite literally building the future. \nWith this in mind\, a question we beg to ask is: why are we looking at a lack of women in the manufacturing industry? And more importantly\, what can we do now to see a significant change in these numbers? \nAfter months of waiting\, we are back next month with the #AfterOfficeHours series event! \nJoin us for our first virtual After-Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga\, CEO Kenya Association of Manufacturers on Thursday 5th November from 4:30 pm. \nPhyllis will share her journey in business and the challenges women in the manufacturing sector face. She will also share what KAM is doing to bridge the gender gap through the Women in Manufacturing Program that aims to\, enhance market access for women industrialists in Kenya\, provide an enabling environment for them and improve their competitiveness locally\, regionally and globally. \nYou do not want to miss out on this. RSVP your attendance here and see you then! \nYou can also join the conversation live via: https://meet.google.com/wif-nhxr-nmy \nAbout the Speaker\nPhyllis Wakiaga is the Chief Executive of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM)\, which is the credible voice of the industry with over 1000 members. \nShe is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Masters in International Trade and Investment Law at the University of Nairobi\, Masters in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology\, Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi\, Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law\, and a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Human Resources Management Kenya. \nShe began her career in 2005 as a Legal Assistant 2005 at Otieno Omunga and Ouma Advocates. She then joined Kenya Airways (KQ) in 2007\, as a customer relations executive\, serving in that capacity for three years. \nShe was then appointed a coordinator of government and industry affairs at KQ. Later she became the manager of the Government and Industry Affairs Division at the airline. \nIn 2013\, she joined the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM)\, as the Head of Policy\, Research and Advocacy and became Chief Executive Officer in 2015. \nPhyllis is an alumnus of the Swedish Institute Management Program on Sustainable Business Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility and was part of the inaugural program for Africa in 2014. \nShe has also been trained in the Role of the Private Sector in Government Policy by Strathmore Business School and John Hopkins University; Investment Treaty Law and Arbitration – Africa International Legal Awareness (AILA) UK London and High-Performance Boardrooms- Institute of Directors. \nPhyllis represents KAM on various boards and chairs the Kenya Water Industrial Alliance. She is also the United Nations Global Compact Network Representative in Kenya. \nShe was also recognized among the Top Africa Economic Leaders for Tomorrow on the Choiseul 100 Africa list 2018 and one of the 2019 Most Influential People of African Descent\, Global 100 Under 40. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Demystifying COVID-19: What you need to know about this Global Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few weeks\, an increasing number of countries across the world have struggled to contain the rapid spread of the novel Coronavirus\, also known as COVID-19. \nSince the outbreak began\, there have been over 100\,000 confirmed cases of the virus reported in over 100 countries — and that number will inevitably continue to rise. \nKenya reported their first case on Friday 13th March and on the same day WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The effect of the outbreak is clear as even more and more sectors of the economy get affected and more countries go on lockdown and the cases soar. \nAs the world grapples with the virus and researchers try to find a solution to this\, we only hope that the situation will be shortlived. \nSince it was discovered a lot has been said\, from myths to facts and the impact of COVID-19.But just how bad is the situation? Why are the protective measures issued by WHO important to you and your loved ones and just what exactly is COVID-19? \nTo understand this\, join us for a virtual workshop on our Facebook Page here around demystifying novel Coronavirus on Thursday\, 19th March 2020 from 3 pm with Jason Louis\, CEO and Co-founder of TIBU Health. \nDuring the session\, Jason will: \n\nIntroduce TIBU and what they do\nDiscuss COVID-19 in detail and help you understand;\n\n\n\n\nWhat it is\,\nHow to protect yourself\nThe do and donts\nHow to self-quarantine\nWhat you do and where to go if you suspect you have been exposed or are  developing symptoms\n\n\n\nYou do not want to miss out on this. RSVP your attendance here! \nJason will be joined by Dr Meimuna Adan\, MB ChB who is a Medical Advisor with10+ years of clinical practice in Kenya Sub-specializing in Ear\, Nose and Throat diseases. \nDr Meimuna pioneered gender based-violence initiatives in Kenya and led medical camps for rural and remote populations. She is also an active researcher in otolaryngology \nAbout the speaker  \nJason is a former Programme Management Officer with the World Health Organisation\, now turned health-tech entrepreneur in Kenya. Prior to co-founding TIBU\, Jason worked on several outbreaks with WHO over the course of a 5-year period. This included responding to two Ebola outbreaks\, Cholera\, Polio and building management/operational capacity across Africa. \nMost recently\, he was based out of the Democratic Republic of Congo for two years and responding to a number of health emergencies there. Jason is trained in public health and epidemiology from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. \nAbout TIBU \nTIBU was first conceived in 2017 to create business opportunities for the vast number of under/unemployed healthcare workers in Kenya. There are equally several healthcare accessibility challenges for the general population we believe our decentralized model addresses. \nOur primary platform is two mobile applications that patients can use to request a registered and licensed healthcare worker on demand. To complement this\, TIBU has developed a patent-pending health kit which is a carbon copy of the tools and equipment found in outpatient healthcare facilities\, including laboratory and phlebotomy capabilities. To this end\, TIBU has currently partnered with a Category F (one of only two) research lab in Nairobi to ensure we adhere to the highest possible standards in terms of diagnostic investigations. Our technology equally put the patient in complete control of their health data. Having health records in someone’s pocket and securely encrypted in another first and a very powerful follow-up and diagnostic tool for attending physicians. \nWe are equally blessed with an extremely talented and globally acclaimed team and board of advisors. Their details and Linkedin Profile can be found on the team page of our website. \n  \n  \nIn light of ongoing developments resulting from the announcement of an active COVID 19 (New Corona Virus) case in the country\, and the directive from the Ministry of Health that among other things\, a ban on public gatherings and major public events\, we have changed most our events to virtual\, during this period. I was really impressed by how Cece is able to organise discussion points so that you understand what you have achieved first\, what you want\, where the challenges are and what help you need to achieve your goals. I felt comfortable enough to share what was going on in my life without judgement. This woman has a wealth of knowledge. She’s done the work herself and can pull from a number of her own personal experiences. I recommend working with Cece if you’re looking to gain clarity on what you want from life both personal and professional”\n~Calgary  (Silicon Valley\, USA) \n“What I like about Cece’s approach is that she naturally draws out my thoughts and feelings so that I can see myself in front of me. Since I started her program\, I have gained clarity about who I am and how I want to live. I now run my own business\, something I have dreamed of for a long time. I enjoy a fulfilling life\, doing what matters most to me on a daily basis. I enjoy relationships with those around me. In short\, I feel the wonder and excitement about life that I remember from my childhood!”  ~Melissa (Nairobi\, Kenya) \n“I have a business coach\, I read books. I watch tutorials\, I meditate. Yet I had a niggling issue that had been holding me back for years. Enter Cece. She effortlessly transformed my issue into a huge opportunity for change and growth. Her ability to listen\, contemplate then intuitively guide you to the place you need to be is unsurpassed. She’s authentic\, wise and super connected. Get to know her”. ~Ben (Melbourne\, Australia) \nAbout your teacher: \nCece Ojany-Bekhor teaches leaders like you how to be well and do well. \nShe runs a one-on-one coaching program for leaders with big goals and their teams – both in Kenya and overseas.
