SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Jack Hartpence //Co-founder PowWater
DESCRIPTION:After Office Hours with Jack Hartpence\nWhile Sustainable access to safe drinking water is the foundation for quality of life on earth today\, still water remains to be the world’s most pressing problem.  \nWith access to safe drinking water communities can move to address secondary and tertiary quality of life indicators such as gender equality\, economic opportunity\, education\, and health \nAccording to UN Statistics\, in 2020\, 74 percent of the global population had access to safely managed drinking water services\, up from 70 percent in 2015.  \nStill\, two billion people live without safely managed drinking water services\, including 1.2 billion people lacking even a basic level of service. \nThis has seen the demand for water rise owing to rapid population growth\, urbanization\, and increasing water needs from the agriculture\, industry\, and energy sectors. \nDecades of misuse\, poor management\, over-extraction of groundwater\, and contamination of freshwater supplies are some of the key contributors to the exacerbated water stress.  \nIn addition\, countries are facing growing challenges linked to degraded water-related ecosystems\, water scarcity caused by climate change\, underinvestment in water and sanitation\, and insufficient cooperation on transboundary waters. \nSDG 6 focuses on universal access to drinking water\, sanitation\, and hygiene by 2030\, To achieve this the current rates of progress would need to increase fourfold.  \nAchieving these targets would save hundreds of people who die from diseases directly attributable to unsafe water\, inadequate sanitation\, and poor hygiene practices. \nAs shocking as the statistics look\, one company is re-writing this story daily trying to close this gap by enabling access to clean water for people across East Africa and South Asia and through empowering the communities they serve. \nIn 2018\, Jack Harpentence Co-founder and CEO of PowWater\, co-founded PowWater\, a public benefit corporation that builds transparent technology and makes impact investments to improve access to clean water. \nSo far Powwater has distributed over 17 million liters of water and its vision is to be the most trusted water supplier in Africa.  \nPowwater currently works in close partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has brought sustainable clean water to over 200\,000 people across East Africa and South Asia.  \nIn 2021\, PowWater was inducted into the Business Call to Action\, a UNDP consortium of the top 250 businesses in the world tackling the SDG’s.  \nAs part of our monthly event series\, #AfterOfficeHours\,  this month\, we are privileged to have Jack Hartpence\, CEO of Powwater host ours After Office Hours session. \n PowWater is democratizing access to high-quality water through water quality testing and an integrated end-to-end platform for water vendors and customers. SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Mark Mwangi\, CEO Amitruck
DESCRIPTION:Road Transport in Africa can be quite cumbersome as it comes with considerable challenges. \nFrom inefficient logistics companies\, long distances\, potholed roads\, and complicated border-crossing procedures the transport industry is fragmented and riddled with untrustworthy middlemen and plagued with a lack of security\, which greatly increases the cost and liability of transporting goods. \nWell\, in recent years the situation is slightly changing as we see the emergence of numerous companies that offer technology solutions to address these and other headaches faced by cargo owners and transporters on the continent. \nOne company that seeks to digitalize logistics in Africa is Amitruck\,  a Nairobi-based trucking logistics marketplace that allows transporters (owners of motorbikes\, pick-ups\, vans and trucks) to find and connect with customers through a mobile app. \nFounded in 2019\, the startup’s platform connects transporters directly with cargo owners via its web or mobile application\, avoiding middlemen. \nTransporters bid for work on the platform\, ensuring competitive prices\, while cargo owners have convenient access to a range of competitive offers and can choose a transporter based on price\, rating and experience.  \nHaving been set-up just before the pandemic hit the nation\, so how was it or has it been building the company up through the pandemics? What challenges have been encountered and what lessons can we gather from the Amitruck Journey? \nJoin us for an After Office Hours session with Mark Mwangi\, CEO and Co-founder at Amitruck as he walks us through his entrepreneurial journey that has seen him build one of the leading and successful companies in the transport and logistics industry. \nDuring the session\, Mark will also walk us through his journey from being a truck driver to becoming a logistics start-up co-founder and CEO\, what really pushed him into taking this bold step and what opportunities lie in the continent’s logistics industry? \nAway from the company\, Mark will also share the dos and don’ts of scaling a company in new territories\, his elevator pitch\, his biggest mistake (and what he learnt from it)\, and what one needs to look out for while seeking company funding. \nAmitruck raised pre-seed round of USD1 million in 2021\, and less than a year later the company backed US$4 million seed round to help it expand across Africa and expand its team across key functions\, including sales\, engineering\, and customer success.  \nAmitruck’s database consists of over 8\,000 vehicles\, which have in just over two years completed almost 100\,000 deliveries for more than 300 corporate clients.  \nConsequently\, its revenue grew 1\,000 percent in 2021. The startup is now eyeing market dominance in the Africa trucking and logistics market\, which accounts for almost 80 per cent of transported goods. \nYou can’t miss this. RSVP your attendance and see you then! \nWhen: Thurs\, 24th November\nWhere: Nairobi Garage // Kilimani - 7th Floor\, Pinetree Plaza\nTime: 5 PM\n About the speaker\nMark Mwangi\, Founder and CEO is an ex-investment banker and worked in the Capital Markets in London where as part of a team of four he managed a €5bn public equities portfolio at Pictet Asset Management.  \nHe also co-founded a startup in the UK called Dalwyn\, a platform that enabled consumers and producers of natural gas to connect and transact directly with each other.  \nBy combining industry experience and technical expertise\, they were using artificial intelligence and automation to transform Europe’s gas market.  \nOne of the origins of Amitruck is that to pay for his full-time Mathematics degree in the UK\, he worked as a full-time night shift truck driver.  \nWhen he moved back to Nairobi in 2018\, he identified a gap in the trucking industry after spending some time with family friends in the cement business.  \nThis culminated in the formation of Amitruck in 2019 to use technology to bring transparency to the logistics industry in Kenya. Mark is part of the Harambean alliance.  \nWhen: Thurs\, 24th November\nWhere: Nairobi Garage // Kilimani - 7th Floor\, Pinetree Plaza\nTime: 5 PM\nRSVP and see you then!

SUMMARY:#AfterOfficeHours with Christian Duffus
DESCRIPTION:#AfterOfficeHours with Christian Duffus\nCryptocurrency\, once only understood among a relatively fringe community\, is becoming a household name quickly.  \nAnalysts estimate that the global cryptocurrency market will more than triple by 2030\, hitting a valuation of nearly $5 billion.  \nWith such numbers\, whether they want to buy into it or not\, investors\, businesses\, and brands can’t ignore the rising tide of crypto for long. \nHowever\, with its quick rise comes a lot of paradoxes surrounding it. Investors believe in regulation\, yet are worried about many of the impacts that regulation will bring about. While businesses and brands also have their fair share of worry. \nDigging into these nuances is key to understanding overall consumer sentiment and predicting consumer behavior around a very uncertain future of cryptocurrency. \nCryptocurrencies may present opportunities but also challenges remain. Now this has seen jurisdictions around the globe also step up efforts to ensure that their legal frameworks meet these challenges. \nTheir sentiments being that maybe through having legal frameworks in place\, the cryptocurrency potential and impact can be realized.  \nWith all these in mind there has been an ongoing debate on whether cryptocurrency is a boon or a bane. In line with this\, this time we do things a little bit differently in our After Office Hours session. \nJoin Christian Duffus\, Founder at Fonbnk on July 7th for an #AfterOfficeHours session as he leads us in a discussion on the future of crypto\, fundraising and path to exits.   \nChris has 3X FinTech exits under his belt and is a leading finTech & telecom & Web3 advisor\, CXO\, entrepreneur & investor.  \nHis insights are not only relevant to the blockchain businesses but to entrepreneurs at various stages of their businesses. \nAlso Read: Dear Younger self // Key Lessons Gathered from a Serial Entrepreneur (AOH Recap) \nDuring the session Chris who is an experienced financial technology entrepreneur and will also share insights from working with innovative organizations in finance\, technology\, and policy having worked on and with a number of venture-backed start-ups in the FinTech and Wireless industries; cumulatively raising nearly $50+ million from top-tier VC firms and successfully exiting three fintech startups: \n\nVite.Money acquired by RoundlyX\nLeaf – acquired by SoFi\nExited payment providers Govolution.\n\nYou don’t want to miss out on this session. RSVP your attendance here. \nWhen: 7th July\nTime: 5 pm\nWhere: Nairobi Garage // Kilimani\, 7th Floor Pinetree Plaza\, off Kamburu Drive\nAbout the Speaker\nChristian Duffus is the Founder and CEO at Fonbnk\, a mission-led crypto web3 company that enables unbanked and underbanked users in mobile-first markets to onramp to digital money using prepaid airtime. Fonbnk recently closed a $3.5 million seed round and is live in 5 markets in Africa including Kenya. \nChristian has a track record of co-founding and exiting 3 financial technology businesses each with a social mission at its core such as LEAF College Savings\, an education focused\, social gifting platform that makes it easy for third-parties to contribute to a child’s college savings. He was able to find a few interested parties who he invited to join a Whatsapp group and was able to sell the airtime credits using the Safaricom SIM card and mPesa account. SUMMARY:#VirtualConnections // After Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga
DESCRIPTION:After Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga\nWe are living in interesting times now. There is a lot of focus on women in the workplace. The diversity agenda is under fire and women are at the core of it\, equal pay\, equal opportunity\, women on boards. \nHowever\, one sector that is still behind when it comes to having women at the top is the manufacturing sector. \nWomen are underrepresented and underutilized in the manufacturing workforce. Despite making up about half of all workers overall\, they account for less than one-third of manufacturing workers. \nInterestingly\, manufacturing continues to grow. It now accounts for approximately 16 per cent of global GDP and 14 per cent of employment. \nBridging that divide will mean reshaping the way people think about jobs in manufacturing\, educating them to the types of jobs that are available and helping them get the qualifications necessary to fill them. \nPut simply\, the manufacturing industry is in a state of reinvention\, and exciting\, educating and empowering women will be critical to the future of the industry. \nWomen represent one of the largest pools of untapped talent for manufacturers and closing manufacturing’s gender gap is key to closing the skills gap that has limited businesses’ ability to evolve and expand. \nIn addition to filling open positions\, though\, research shows that gender diversity benefits manufacturing firms by creating a culture that improves their ability to innovate and grow. \nAnd more than just bottom lines\, women in manufacturing are building meaningful careers—and quite literally building the future. \nWith this in mind\, a question we beg to ask is: why are we looking at a lack of women in the manufacturing industry? And more importantly\, what can we do now to see a significant change in these numbers? \nAfter months of waiting\, we are back next month with the #AfterOfficeHours series event! \nJoin us for our first virtual After-Office Hours with Phyllis Wakiaga\, CEO Kenya Association of Manufacturers on Thursday 5th November from 4:30 pm. \nPhyllis will share her journey in business and the challenges women in the manufacturing sector face. She will also share what KAM is doing to bridge the gender gap through the Women in Manufacturing Program that aims to\, enhance market access for women industrialists in Kenya\, provide an enabling environment for them and improve their competitiveness locally\, regionally and globally. \nYou do not want to miss out on this. RSVP your attendance here and see you then! \nYou can also join the conversation live via: https://meet.google.com/wif-nhxr-nmy \nAbout the Speaker\nPhyllis Wakiaga is the Chief Executive of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM)\, which is the credible voice of the industry with over 1000 members. \nShe is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Masters in International Trade and Investment Law at the University of Nairobi\, Masters in Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology\, Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi\, Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law\, and a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Human Resources Management Kenya. \nShe began her career in 2005 as a Legal Assistant 2005 at Otieno Omunga and Ouma Advocates. She then joined Kenya Airways (KQ) in 2007\, as a customer relations executive\, serving in that capacity for three years. \nShe was then appointed a coordinator of government and industry affairs at KQ. Later she became the manager of the Government and Industry Affairs Division at the airline. \nIn 2013\, she joined the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM)\, as the Head of Policy\, Research and Advocacy and became Chief Executive Officer in 2015. \nPhyllis is an alumnus of the Swedish Institute Management Program on Sustainable Business Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility and was part of the inaugural program for Africa in 2014. \nShe has also been trained in the Role of the Private Sector in Government Policy by Strathmore Business School and John Hopkins University; Investment Treaty Law and Arbitration – Africa International Legal Awareness (AILA) UK London and High-Performance Boardrooms- Institute of Directors. \nPhyllis represents KAM on various boards and chairs the Kenya Water Industrial Alliance. She is also the United Nations Global Compact Network Representative in Kenya. \nShe was also recognized among the Top Africa Economic Leaders for Tomorrow on the Choiseul 100 Africa list 2018 and one of the 2019 Most Influential People of African Descent\, Global 100 Under 40. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:AFTER OFFICE HOURS WITH TERRYANNE CHEBET
DESCRIPTION:I think you’ll agree with me when I say: Being a leader is one of the most difficult yet the most rewarding positions in the world.\nThe joy of seeing dreams come to life and people just pursuing their passion and grow in their areas of expertise. \nHowever\, it’s not quite rosy it takes so much to become a great leader. When business coaches list the traits of great leaders\, vision\, passion\, persistence\, resilience\, hardwork are top of the list. \nBut it takes more than that. One trait that is mostly forgotten or rather overlooked is courage. Business leaders make tough choices and juggle competing priorities. This calls for courage just as much as it tests decision-making abilities. \nIt is courage that differentiates a person who ‘juggles’ tasks from a leader who handles stress efficiently. A leader who sees problems as opportunities to innovate. \nFor some leaders\, it takes more than courage to handle businesses\, hold a top position in the corporate world. And at the end of the day\, motherhood/fatherhood comes calling and they still remain sane. \nOne great example of an entrepreneur and a corporate leader is Terryanne Chebet. Traits that she has embraced over time and how they have been impactful in her roles. \nThis session will take place on 26th September from 6 pm\, on 7th Floor // Pinetree Plaza. \nRSVP your attendance for this great upcoming event in Nairobi here and see you then. \nAbout the Speaker\nTerryanne Chebet is an exemplary Media Expert. SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Grant Brooke
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has been through the Entrepreneurship journey will tell you that the journey is not easy. The companies that we revere are successful not because they started but because they failed on the way and learnt from the failures. \nAs an entrepreneur\, the challenges that you are facing today are not unique to your company. From securing funds\, to scaling down occasionally\, cashflow management\, sourcing talent; let’s face it\, most entrepreneurs do not hit us with these hard truths\, but they go through these challenges. \nTake for instance a company like Cellulant\, the CEO\, Ken Njoroge once mentioned that they had to meet over 60 different investors in a two-year period that took up 400 pitches across the world to secure funding. \nTwiga Foods on the other hand\, secured its first funding in six months after they set-up their business\, but still they were constantly short of capital and struggled to meet the rapidly growing demand. \nDespite these challenges these two companies have survived the wave of time to become one of Africa’s most sought after. But the question to most entrepreneurs is do we get the whole entrepreneurship concept? Is there a manual to this? how far are we willing to go? and do we have what it takes to step up our game? \nJoin us for our next After Office Hours session with Grant Brooke\, Executive Director at Twiga Foods\, one of the fastest growing companies in East Africa as he shares his entrepreneurship journey on 6th June from 6.00pm to 7.00 pm on 7th Floor at Nairobi Garage Pinetree Plaza. \nGrant\, will share the Twiga Food story from a perspective that you have not heard before. Get to learn more on how he started his journey into entrepreneurship\, how he met his co-founder Peter Njonjo\, how the company got to scale-up fast\, the hurdles the company had to jump\, the lessons\, the regrets and much more. \nAbout Grant Brook \nGrant Brooke is the Executive Director of Twiga Foods\, a mobile-based\, B2B platform used by small- and medium-sized businesses to purchase fruit and vegetable stock from local and regional farmers. \nCurrently\, the company works with 5\,226 vendors to source and deliver quality produce at fair prices. With the use of technologies such as Blockchain\, Twiga Foods has emerged to become Kenya’s largest seller of bananas\, potatoes\, tomatoes\, and other staple commodities. \nBorn in Texas\, Grant Brooke found himself in Kenya during graduate school studying the impact of religion on economic choice-making in informal markets and spending a lot of time researching food vendors. \nFrom there\, he went to Oxford to pursue a doctorate on the subject. At Oxford\, he met and became friends with Peter Njonjo\, the former GM for Coca Cola in East Africa. The two began to discuss how they might apply Coke’s distribution model to produce\, and from there Twiga was born. \nSince the launch in 2014\, Grant has led Twiga to being one of East Africa’s fastest growing enterprises\, attracting top global investors\, talent\, development partners\, and media attention in the likes of CNN\, CCTV\, Fast Company\, and The BBC. \nTwiga has also grown to be the largest supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables in Nairobi\, with some 250 full-time staff\, delivering to thousands of vendors a week. \nBy March this year Twiga Foods had reached the $30 million (Sh300 million)-mark in investment. In April\, Twiga Foods\, appointed the company’s co-founder Peter Njonjo to become the company’s CEO taking over from Grant Brooke. \nTwiga Foods was also named among East Africa’s top ten tech companies to watch out for in 2019 by I-DEV International. \n  \n  \nWe regularly host thought-provoking and inspiring talks\, skill-focused seminars and unique networking evenings designed to provide opportunities for professional development and creative growth. SUMMARY:After Office Hours with Dr. Muthoni Ntonjira
