Disrupt Africa, the one stop shop for all the news, information and commentary on Africa’s exciting tech startups and innovation ecosystem, has moved into the Nairobi Garage as it looks to increase its coverage of Kenya.
Founded in November last year by Gabriella Mulligan and Tom Jackson, both formerly part of the management team at HumanIPO and amongst the most prominent tech and business journalists in Africa, Disrupt Africa initially got off the ground in South Africa.
But the concept is a pan-African one. Disrupt Africa’s aim is to profile and report on as many startups as possible, bringing the exciting innovations and opportunities Africa has to offer to the attention of as many potential customers, partners and investors as possible across Africa and the rest of the world.
And it is now Kenya’s turn to be centre of attention of the new site, which is already gaining significant traction across the continent.
“Kenya was where it all began for us in Africa, and we’re well aware of the amount of fantastic startups the country is producing,” Gabriella says.
“Our goal is to tell the stories of these startups and what they are achieving to the world. As in the rest of Africa, too often the extraordinary innovations being designed, created and monetised by individuals or small teams in co-working spaces in Kenya are overlooked by the mainstream press or even the local tech press that should be reporting on stories like these. Disrupt Africa is changing all that. We’re a startup for startups.”
Given its pan-African outlook, the future for Disrupt Africa is both exciting and extremely busy.
“From Nairobi, we’re heading to Lagos, where we’ll again be hunting for stories of disruption, innovation, and economic opportunity,” Tom says.
“Over the course of the next year or so we’re going to be travelling a lot, meeting startups from Angola to Zimbabwe, attending events, reporting on funding rounds, and providing background and context on the developments within the space. We’ve also got some new functionalities to add to the site in the coming months, so watch this space. We really are the online hub the African tech startup ecosystem has been missing.”
For now though, the team is in Kenya, and keen to tell your stories. Find them in the office, or email gabriella@disrupt-africa.com or tom@disrupt-africa.com.
