Building in Public: A Founder’s Journey in Nairobi

When I started my startup journey, I had a laptop, a big idea, and a lot of questions. What I didn’t have was a clear roadmap — or a community. A year later, I can confidently say that building in public, surrounded by the right people, has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life.

Nairobi Garage became more than just a workspace. It became a launchpad, a sounding board, and a support system. Here are five key lessons I’ve learned along the way.

1. Community accelerates progress

Entrepreneurship can be lonely. But being part of a community of builders, mentors and operators keeps you grounded, accountable and inspired.

The conversations over coffee often lead to the biggest breakthroughs.

Focus spaces at Nairobi Garage help founders get work done.

2. Failure is part of the process

Not every idea works, and that’s okay. I’ve had to pivot, rethink and let go of things that didn’t serve the vision.
What’s helped is being around people who’ve been there before — and who remind me that failure is data, not defeat.

3. Share your journey

Building in public — whether through conversation, social media or community events — opens doors. It attracts opportunities, feedback and people who genuinely want to see you win.

“Progress isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just showing up, again and again.” – Wanjiku Mwangi

4. Your environment matters

The physical space you work in influences how you think, who you meet and what you build.

Nairobi Garage offers more than desks — it offers energy, diversity and access to a thriving innovation ecosystem.

5. Give back

As you grow, take time to support others. Whether it’s sharing a lesson, making an introduction or simply being present, community thrives when we all contribute.
Here’s to many more lessons, and to building a more inclusive, innovative Nairobi — together.
